Honestly its just Massive, Distortion, Bitcrusher, tube, Envelopes, Bounce -> out, and then have one long note pitched down.
amirite?

Not quite. I used frequency modulation. Granted you can make some pretty nasty sounds with Massive (Datsikish, Ajapai-isg, Zeds Dead-ish, Liquid Stranger-ish and the like), but you cant quite get the fullness that FM allows. It you were to make a patch in Massive then distort it as you were mentioning all you have is a super harmonic waveform that has a TON of energy in the high frequencies. Not quite the same. Even with resampling and filtering its near impossible to take an additive/subtractive synth and recreate FM. Just saying. FM is boss for dirty bass

haha, love the tip you gave, been on this for a while brodjcainn wrote:I've been debating between myself and I about doing this. HOWEVER. If you would like to know more about how this sound was created, PM me on here and I'll be more than happy to give some VERY helpful hints. Again, this sound is mostly sine waves and that is one of the biggest tips I can give right off the bat.mthrfnk wrote:Any chance of a shot of your Ops and Effects windows in FM8

I, too, think it's funny that people try so hard to get these dirty bass sounds with massive, when FM8 sounds so utterly EVIL! I spent a lot of time learning how to get those sounds, and I've never really had a 'production secret' until now, and Its pretty hard-earned. Even saying "I used FM8" is HARDLY a clue!
that being said, lets all get together, turn up our noses, and use words like "granted", "furthermore" and "utterly" whilst we sip our tea. Pinkies up, Gents!

+1 good sir. Im sick of the youtube vids too. First, i read all the posts in this topic. The post that helped me the most was this one:dbzheir2 wrote:Dude, that's amazing! How??Espiritus wrote:I am new to Dubstep, and have only been making it for a couple of weeks, but i thought i'd give it a try.

Allthough i have added and changed a lot of things, the text above gave me the basis information on how to make the sound.Phallic Mcdynamite wrote: its actually incredibly simple really, load up massive and choose the deepthroat oscillator. wavetable position doesnt really matter, just stick it where you like it. next you need a scream filter. again i'd set this where ever you think sounds good, but i stuck an lfo on the "scream" knob to give it a bit of movement.
in the fx section ive got a classic tube distortion (set to about 50% wet and 50% driven) and a dimension expander. once again just set the parametres wherever your ears tell you too. you'll also need to add a tiny bit of feedback (around 9 o'clock ish). finally i added a sine shaper as an insert with the drive at around 2 o'clock and the wet at 100%. this is the basic sound in massive (and its already quite tasty).
the rest of the sound is all in the insert section of my midi track. distortion (and lots of it) comes from camel crusher but you can use whatever you prefer. ive used several instances of it adding a slight amount of distortion each time rather than fucking it up in one go. in between each distortion ive added sugarbytes wow filter a few times (which i cant say enough good things about. really fantastic filter vst for dubstep). ive used the gurgle and rejecter presets and tweaked the lfos on them to give it some movement, but i believe the effect can be achieved with any filter using band reject settings and automation. it seems to me that filtering out mid frequencies is the way to create that snarling aggresive sound (think its used a lot with dnb reeces) and ive used a really good free band reject filter before (google!) but seriously guys, that wow filter is the shit and is well worth saving up for.
finally, remove all frequencies below 90, drench in reverb/delay and stick a sub under it (i duplicated the midi track and changed the patch from evil monster rape to a lovely sine wave). and that, believe it or not, is it. play low notes (obviously) and do some pitch bends.
This video may help you out too, regarding the use of presets:
First i made the basis growl in massive, and increasingly added distortion with the WOW-filter, then i removed the midrange in the Fabfilter pro equalizer, i distorted the sound again using the CamelCrusher preset and the Bertill preset (http://www.studiotoolz.net/bertill) (they are both free ;D)
I then added a compressor and some reverb.
The order of the patches does matter. This is what i did for the basis growl:
Massive -> WOW (gargle) -> WOW (bass presets) -> FabFilter Pro (remove midrange) -> CamelCrusher (annihilate) -> WOW (rejecter) -> Bertill (4 - tweak the knobs a bit!) -> Compresser -> Reverb
I tweaked and changed the sound of pretty much all the presets, so just try until you are satisfied.
After this, you still won't have the massive monster sound. There is more:
I duplicated the track, and lowered the pitch to make the sound more brütal! I then added another track and created a sub-bass in Massive. I then added a Sylenth1 track and used the "LD TeleSynth" sound to make it more atmospheric (cannot remember if i manipulated the sound further).
I then grouped the four tracks, and added some reverb. NOW comes the most important part, and what really makes the sound "speak". Add WOW with the "rejecter" preset. You can now modulate the growl to have a sort of open or closed sound. I added some more reverb and equalization.
At last i added another sub-bass outside of the group, just to make it sound deeper. I added a drum rack with kicks and cymbals. I shortened the length of a snare crash and looped it, and added a High Pass filter to that specific snare. The manipulated snare crash made the sound grainier

When recording, i used the pitch-bend.
And.. change the volume of each track until you get the sound you want.
Ableton Live 8 was used. This is not meant to be a step-by-step guide. Just try your best, and take your time.
