The journey is the most important aspect your seem to be missing. The proud feeling you seek will be achieved when you worked your butt off learning. There are people on here who make kick ass songs but you still catch them saying its shit compared to "kryptiorbisomalacokiurial koancisionillex"... Point being it's a never ending journey and the rewards come during the journey not after :W:

We're talking years, not weeks buddy. The rabbit hole goes a lot deeper than you think.

Learning theory is the equivalent of being taught kung fu moves. It still doesn't make you a master capable of neutralizing any enemy you are faced with. You need time and practice, you need devotion and infatuation. It's not about fantasizing about people going crazy at the club and everyone having a good time, it's about having sound dominate your thoughts and seeing waves in everything, observing in the world around you consonance and dissonance, attraction and repulsion, the explicit and implicit, the subtle and obtuse. You may learn the technique but to master the art you must immerse yourself in it.

Not only do you need to listen to a vast amount of music but you need to do it with a musician's ear. All the music you've ever heard has had an effect on your subconscious ear but until you go back and analyze it again after having learned the craft, you won't get as much benefit from it. Listen to some soul music, reggae, blues. Something with a roots aspect to it. It will help you with harmony, depth and groove. And who knows, you might come out of it making some deep tracks once you see the light in the dark side.

Imo you don't need to read up about music theory at all.
Just keep on making tracks, but finish them.
You will definitely be able make the tracks you want to make after a while

Yea, but he was more passionate about aliens and killing all jews. Hopefully being passionate about music doesn't lead you to kill people. Well....unless you're a rapper. Those guys pretty much have to kill each other to keep their image proper so they can sell albums. Or at least go to prison.......hey wait a minute. The OP should totally get into making hip-hop. I mean he'll already have the prison time going for him.

i listened to that first soundcloud link and tbh that's pretty good for someone who's never even touched or thought about music production before now, making decent music takes years, i'm in a final year of my degree in music production and my tracks are still pretty poor, that bass was sounding ok, drop a track u like onto an audio track next to yours and just see what they do, then copy. also limiting yourself to 'brostep' isn't gonna do you any favours creatively.

you need to grasp the concept of depth, i struggled with this at first, you listen to tracks and hear the big upfront things and think yeah i can do that, and then your track sounds lame and empty. thats because you just made a track with only the forfront elements, you need stuff going on in the background. i know those arent mixed or anything, but that is why they sound shit, the levels are all over the place the the bass is just one sound, thats really dry and in your face, so its not gonna sound full. the drums get swamped by everything else. you need to place your elements in the mix with volume, reverbs and shit and have background elements to fill out the track, then it will sound bigger. this musc isnt all about music theory either, you dont need theory for it. all your are making it sounds, which alot of them pitchbend! you just need to KNOW music and know what sounds good together, just mess around until something clicks, brostep is more about timbres that go well together instead. if you use only the white notes on a keyboard then it should all go together musically cos they are all in the same key. just keep making tunes, reading or watching videos wont mean you will suddenly bang out an amazing track. and you probably wont make a good track by the time you get banged up, jus sayin.

I hate to be the guy telling you this, but maybe you should just NOT make music. being able to synthesize a filthy womp is not musicianship

okay well i love brostep and music can be anything so i consider that music and i have a strong passion for it, are you trying to say i should give up my passion just because all i know how to make are filthy sounds? thats ridiculous
I don't see how you think that is "ridiculous." I actually think it couldn't be more accurate. If you can only make one sound, and that sound is as horrible and unmusical as filth brostep wobbles, you honestly shouldn't be making music. You need to expand your horizons. Soon you'll grow out of the brostep shit and realize the beauty in the deeper stuff. All of this brostep shit is a hipster fad, but the deeper stuff, will never die out. Learn to make some more soulful tunes.

^ Real shit.

While I agree with the majority of what you are saying, its perfectly plausible to put soul into brostep...I've heard it many times before. Also, when I first started out producing, I didn't know what the heck synthesis even was, and that didn't mean I should have quit. I'd say let him keep at it, and its up to him to determine whether he gets anywhere with it or not.

And I wouldn't call a brostep wobble unmusical...it depends on how you use it, really.

dafuq mate, why so harsh?

after reading this thread all i can tell you is: listen, listen, listen. listen to tons of music with GOOD headphones/speakers, til you start noticing all the little details, til the patterns emerge from the chaos, til you can listen to the same tune 4 times in a row each time focusing on a different thing and every time you'll find new stuff you didnt notice before.
maybe weed will help you reach that state. take notes, and listen listen listen until it starts being like that all the time.
at the same time experiment with effects like phasers, filters, compressors, delays, reverbs et cetera til you can be in a club dancing your ass off drunk as fuck but at the same time your brain starts separating the different layers of the bass and you start hearing the effects used.
you might get to a point where everything you hear sounds predictable and boring, and that can be depressing but you'll get over it. switch genres for a while, listen to stuff you never liked with your new pair of ears and try to understand the patterns and rules of other styles, then apply them to the music you make in a way that it still sounds like your favorite tunes but fresh and different.

but the most important part: patience. what you're trying to do is basically rewiring your brain and that won't happen overnight. it'll take a few years but trust me it pays off if you don't give up.
