I'd imagine if I had to guess he's speaking to an American audience here and America is lacking cultural elements that are present in the UK. People naturally try to understand things within their cultural framework. Most people in the U.S. if you tried to reference UK Garage or something like El-B to explain what you're talking about they would have no idea what you're talking about. I think saying whatever he said, I don't remember the exact quote but the bit about dubstep being like slow heavy hip hop puts it in a cultural framework Americans can understand. He didn't say it IS slow hip hop or whatever, he just likened it to something a casual american listener will understand.
So because people are too dumb to understand something, then you should just lie to them and tell them something that is incorrect?? Which they will then go on to tell other people, who will also be incorrect. This sounds like the root of the problem tbh. Artists who people look up to, telling their fans factually incorrect information, who then go and tell other people these ''facts'' who, when told the truth, cant comprehend it because they were told something different to begin. If Bassnectar had told his fans that dubstep actually developed mainly out of Uk Garage with possible influences from dancehall, jungle and hip hop, why would this be so hard for people to understand?
All I'm saying is he didn't (other than the word spawn I guess) say that dubstep came from hip hop, he's trying to put the sound into a box people from here would understand. To me he's describing the sound to the uninitiated more than he's trying to make a statement about what scenes dubstep evolved out of. If he were in fact saying he was giving everyone a dubstep history lesson then yeah, I could see the problem with what he said. However to say it's LIKE slowed down hip hop, I don't have a problem with that because for the average American who like I said doesn't really have Garage as a cultural reference point for the most part, it serves the purpose of giving some kind of idea of what to expect out of the beat and tempo.

Then why did he bother explaining breakbeat, garage etc. if he was just gonna throw all that away and call it slowed down hip hop?

don't like his music but seems like a cool guy. the 2step/halfstep thing is so confusing. Dubstep was like dark garage wasn't it?

Basically. People originally looks at it as sort of a garage/old school jungle revival, and that's how a lot of people got into it. Of course, it had its own characteristics, which became more accentuated over time.

"gahhh hoped it wouldn't get to this point but yea. i'm bassnectars mum."

MUM, U say, that sounds british. GOD I LOVE UK PRODUCERS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH MORE THAN "Bloody" Americans!

Puts on one HELL of a show, there were even 17 OYS waring very strange ensembles.

He really knew how to hone the sound, it wasn't simply "BROFUNNERY"

There was a very carful dynamic between the Rhythm, BASS, and Treble (Samples)
The fact that he's carved his own niche in music history makes it obvious that culture is shaping to be something extraordinary.
NO ONE ELSE HAS THE BALLS TO PULL OFF A STUNT LIKE HE DOES.

Yea, TBH, I'm only now really starting to love that grimy west coast flavor.
I've been a UK Devotee since my inception into bass music.
Which is totally stupid, considering a banging track can come from anywhere.
and there's no comparison between the magnitude of a Bassnectar show vs almost anything else.
There were lots of really important points made in this thread about why Bassnectar is awesome.
and the bottom line is "TOP 40" or not, he is an astonishing producer who totally deserves the attention/credit he is given.
