seems like it's not just me who fancies something a bit different when listening to radio then, respect blackdown :Q: with all the mixes, podcasts etc. available these days you could listen and explore your chosen niche sound all day all on your own. when listening to radio, i just want to hear something that i wouldn't usually listen to or a sound/artist which hasn't got a big platform. djs to educate/challenge and push fwd instead of pander to the audience and consolidate existing genres. dusk & blackdown do this, its why people in this thread have had a hard time pinning down which genre they play. its just a viiiibbbeee maaaaan 8)

thats not to put down djs like youngsta though. there are many strengths to the almost tunnel-vision approach to sounds certain djs have, a distillation of the 'insert genre name here' aesthetic.

in regards to which djs might be leaving the station, perhaps elijah & skilliam??? seeing as both royal t and swindle have their own shows now.

Elijah & skilliam are grafters. I find that idea pretty unlikely!

Youngsta will still be on rinse just for the fact that his sister is part of the management

Yea...two producers we play have got shows so we leave? Where is the logic? Surely we just continue breaking new names?

even though i have no interest in that butterz sound as a grime fan, their show on rinse is fine tbf. my argument stands at, why does anybody have to leave a roster that was already 'healthy'? (distance and jay 5ive in-particular). i also don't fall for this 'bring new talent/regime onto rinse and move with the times' talk coz i see gee asking for old school garage dj's on twitter the other day. cool 2001 tune selection. man shoulda left rinse how it is instead of alienating long time listeners.

Geeneus points out in this interview about creative destruction and rebuilding of the station. I understand about how keeping the old guard in and how it relates to the long term listeners. But in the past Geeneus has arguably had to get rid of a top name to replace one of the current dj's which people enjoy.

If you wanted to keep the old guard then you'd have to cut people's sets down, which may not be to the liking of both dj's and listeners. Dj's usually have new material with them for their show so trying to fit it in in a smaller time constraint makes it a hell of a lot harder for them. With listeners I'd imagine if youngsta's set was reduced to an hour there would be alot of unhappy listeners.

Its obviously not too pleasing that some of the classic rinse dj's have been cut but I have faith in rinse to showcase new quality talent.

Mad creative talk.

It all boils down to more listeners = more advertising revenue. Maybe when it was a strict pirate, they would push more underground niche stuff. As popular dubstep and alike might be to us, funky / house / garage is far far far more popular (unless we're talking skrillex esque stuff).

more listeners more advertising revenue?

whenever i listen to rinse i dont hear any adverts. Only for whatever night they are putting on, and they usually sell out anyway

man i tried listening to dusk and blackdown show like you guys recommended, and didn't enjoy it..the music policy was too cliched in an urban context, throughout the spectrum of music offered would be broader :(

thanks will check it out, i suppose what i am looking for is a decent electronica show that mixes a bit of everything along the way too. Hard to come by these days :( there used to be the bleep show which was fucking amazing, playing all these odd tracks from random net labels, but i think thats stopped now.

i made a mix of the kinds of stuff i like Soundcloud if anyone knows a radio station that plays this kind of music, let me know, cheers :Q:

Our show might be worth a look for you. check out our last one here We generally try to mix it up a little outside of the dubstep the label is known for, at the moment.

Chef and Antisocial were probably my favourite shows on Rinse :( At least the new Royal-T show's sick.

Chef only got a proper regular show last year, before that he just sort of covered for people. Hopefully he's still kept to do cover shows and things.
