I was reading billains q&a and he was talking about this. Did rankin give any techniques to layering the sound? I'd imagine that it would be hard to get some sounds to blend well with others
Not really, in one example he had 2 or 3 drawn out noises, totally random samples, layered on a bass and panned outwards slightly - sounded good.

In another example he literally had his massive patch playing while 3 samples were cut together and played on top.

He didn't EQ or mix them together properly but it sounded good - I suppose it's just trial and error - if it sounds good go with it.

This pure saw wave with two low pass filters.
I know, it's not some heavy growl but it shows how easy you can achieve talking effect.

Then just move macro 1 and you get talking effect ^_^
Don't forget to add some distortion to fill frequencies cut by the filters.

how do people make this kind of sound in fm8? Whenever i try to make something in fm8 it has way too little highs. Can you explain your synth?

Well, this thread is going to to hell pretty quickly, so let's just get back to growls, shall we?

Soundcloud

I realize this probably sounds bland, it's just FM8 + some EQ modulation & reverb. I've really only gotten into making growl-type sounds recently, does it sound like I'm on the right track (to me it sounds fine so far, but for all I know, it may sound shit to everyone else lol)?

would you mind posting the patch? :) ive beeen trying to get mine to sound like yours and it just doesnt compare.

I made this sound last month while I was in vegas for edc, If anyones interested I can do a little tutorial, it's pretty simple, basically just 2 envelopes are doing most the modulations & an envelope with an lfo between bandreject>hipass. I put the wow filter on the first part & no wow filter for the second part
Soundcloud

I have a few others that are kinda similar to this, but I'm still kinda scratching my head on how to do the longer growls that are longer in decay & more sustained :u: but then again i haven't put much time into learning :6:

the third part of the sound in the waveform sounds interesting, what did you automate there?

All this stuff ITT makes me really sad that my synthesis skills are so bad ;_;

not a great growl really, barely a growl. but for this one I chose not to use any standard filters but instead used only eq 8 . I set the range to 200% so my band passes would be all the more noticeable.

BTW, the way I do the automation is I link all the parameters i want to modulate and assign them to one macro knob. Then I can just draw in the performance real easily one one screen. Its slightly limited in the way you can map things (only lets you set a min and a max) but I find it is much more time efficient that modulating every parameter.

But i'm not sure maybe its better to write in automation for each plugin separately, what do you guys think?

my tip for this thread is try to restrict yourself in using less FX types, stick to making the sound with automating distortion and EQs only. i tend to get close to sounds i have in mind by first using only those two on basic waveforms, then later as you get really close start adding in other FX (phaser, flanger) at different parts of the chain to see if you can improve it further. its a bit harder to notice what changes you are making by adding in a bunch of different FX with no particular order.

That's actually just an envelope on the bandwidth of the bandreject filter inside massive, in the morph section of one of the envelopes which is modulating the bandwidth, I have another envelope which is then modulating the s-loop paramater *both of these envelopes are only using the the morph section if that makes sense* also the second envelope is modulating the resonance a bit which helps that last part what your referring to I think as well
