i just don't get it when one wants to throw in the 'wasted resources' argument. i mean seriously Today, we're talking millions UPON MILLIONS of dollars. besides, if you REALLY look into the state of american prisons, you will come to the conclusion that a life sentence is truly a fate worse than death.

There always is...and whenever you poll the public its pretty much always around 50/50. Luckily the Establishment are clever enough not to ever have a referendum. It's one of those issues where Parliamentary democracy actually does some good!

We had a go yesterday, but tbh I was on rocky ground playing devil's advocate for vegetarians as a meat-eater.

As a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights we're forbidden from carrying out the death penalty during peacetime. It's one of the reasons we won't extradite to the US if the target is facing the death penalty. It's a shit right wing reactionary clarion call that we can't do, thankfully.

I believe it, but I'm not naive enough to think everyone can actually be rehabilitated. He's young, obviously his mind is filled with ideas he has learned over time which there is a chance of reversing. He won't be allowed a 'normal' life if he is ever released anyway. People have gone to prison for murdering based on race etc, and have reversed their views over time. Maybe he will convert to Islam in there. That would be far more of a 'punishment' based on his current views than just killing him lol. Execution is getting off light imo.

Anyway it's no surprise he was declared sane, I expected nothing else. Insane people don't plan out meticulous plots like that over months.

rehabilitation sounds lovely in theory but imo is the same as a death sentence anyway, because someone would kill him as soon as he got into the general public. And if he truly was rehabilitated and saw what he had done then he would kill himself from remorse, as any decent person would do. You wouldn't be able to take the guilt.

I mean what makes a society more noble for the fact that they will lock someone in solitary forever above just giving him a quick bullet?
