Glotti, thought you had a different post there... Something about an ultranova, the day I was trying these synths out, the ultranova sounded pretty amazing. But honestly I don't have much experience w it at all. Menus and all that shit. If you're in a hybrid setup, I vote no synths with menus. Vsts can sound awesome, highly programmable, perfect. Only reasons to work synths out of box is sound quality on like true analog, or interface...

Glotti: Save up some cash and get something from Dave Smith...the Mopho desktop is a beast...the Mopho x4 keyboard is out now...though then about 1,200 I think...I've seen a bunch of Mopho desktops on ebay for around 250 USD...picked one up for that price and couldn't be happier. Mostly use it for bass patches but it can do kicks, percs, and monoleads easily...

I got one of these guys. Laugh all you want, it's cheap, fun and it rules. It's kind of like a lo-fi DX7 with only two operators. Pretty cool.

I'll probably get an Alesis Ion when one goes up on ebay for a reasonable price. It's one of the only synths under $1000 that has impressed me with it's sound and still has a nice interface/features as well. The Micron and Miniak just look so painful to edit.

Its so dodgy I love it. I had a 680 as a kid and busted it trying to circuitbend a while back, a friend posted me his one when he moved to Finland - I was so excited but the volume of the background noise on his one makes it unusable :( zipper noise when you change the parameters sounds dope

Got the new Event 2030 monitors a week or two back, fuck they sound good - I was listening to an Agnes Obel track - just her singing, a piano, and a violin i think...and for 2 or 3 lines in the whole track the backing doubles were a man instead of her, couldnt even pick that up on my K701 headphones....solid bass too.
Inspiring, ive been putting in a lot of hours into tuna since I got them :D

Just picked up an analogue 'bitcrusher' (sample rate reducer)

I personally see two main advantages in using hardware...

One being the "fun" factor, which many people seem to forget quite often in production forums, I personally dont enjoy myself with just Logic and some VSTs, while I can turn my uber simple and limited Korg ER1 and spend the entire afternoon doing loops and bleeps with a smile in my face... of course, this is personal, as many people have the samm fun with software, I just cant do it

The second would definitly be the fact that when using VSTs you are generally emulating or imitating analog subtractive synthesis, therefore I personally cannot believe that using an emulation or the real thing is the same... when using VSTs I tend to spend a lot of time during mixing making them sound "analog" (by adding some noise, equing, putting them through some analog fuzz and filters, etc), something I dont need to do when using analog synths... I personally believe tha digital (and therefore software, as I believe the most powerfull digital synths are in the box) has its own advantages and powers, but when this tries to imitate analog it doesnt make sense, why would you use a digital simulation of a square wave in Massive if you can buy a mopho and have the real thing going on? On the other hand, synths as Max and Reaktor are the beast as they do not try to emulate or overlap analog synths (appart from the modular concept), there is already a family of instruments that are build to create your raw nasty square wave, digital should be used more for granular, additive and other forms of synthesis that are nearly impossible or unusable (because of stability and stuff) to achieve with an analog

by the way, as someone was asking in the third or second page if we use analog outboard... I use a pair of Studio Projects VTB1, which are not fancy but do have a sound of their own and can make VSTs shine as well as making vocals stand pretty well. I also have an ART PRO VLAII which has to be the best addition to any project studio or homestudio, it sounds great and seems a totally different approach to using software compressors. I am also using a lot the filter in my Slim Phatty and its "overload" function to distort a lot of my electribe drums (i love to put my drums through that filter and then go crazy with the phattys LFO while controling the cutoff)... I also have quite a lot of guitar pedals which are great for mixing and getting efx... I kind of get a bit annoyed when people claim hardware is expensive... I bought the VTB1 for 110€ a piece, thats the price of a lot of hardware, also many of my pedals are dirty cheap such as my beloved Artec Analog Delay. which is an amazing analog delay that costs 40€ in Thomann, also I have some electroharmonix boosters and fuzzs and all are under 80€, I kind of feel that these little pieces bring a lot of character and new dimensions to your sound and you dont need to break the bank

Starting working on a "wishlist" of sorts for some stuff I'm gonna purchase soon.
Gonna get a notivation Drum Station, seems like a decent way to get 808 and 909 emulation cheaply with lots of flexibility. Just wish it had a built in sequencer so think im gonna get a korg er-1 for that, unless someone can recommend an alternative?

Then a x0xb0x, probably gonna get a ready built one. I've got some soldering experience but not enough to comfortable take on a project that size. Wanna get some distortion for this as well, most likely a russian big muff pedal.

the big muff is amazing! I have a sovtek black one and a tone wicker... both really usefull and will make that drumstation scream

I assume some of you guys have electribes? I have an ER-1, how do you get it to sync up with FL Studio?

I'm thinking of picking up a Yamaha AN1x, because it sounds awesome, looks like it would make a nice midi controller, and looks pretty deep and versatile. Anyone have any experiences? People say it's hard to program, but looking at it, it doesn't seem that bad.

Had one, had it stolen. Do you consider the minikorg easy to program? Same kind of matrix. With those synths you are pretty much programming versus something like the kong ms2000 or minbrute which can be played, if yer catching my drift.

whenever i used a microkorg the parameters written on the front panel never seemed to match what the knobs were assigned to for some reason :? maybe i'm just retarded

Yeah it's just you! Naw that matrix is cluttered. It's a good efficient idea, but they work better for people that really know subtractive synthesis, and are just like dialing in a sound which they've already engineered in their head. Jew know. A lot of times, having access to all controls greatly augments an instruments playability and usefulness in the studio. I mean if you have all the controls of your synth locked away in a matrix, ,ight as well be using a vst, is my feeling.
