my way of musicproducing and problems II

Post by Umea » Sat Nov 24, 2012 6:39 pm

Hey guys.

a few weeks ago i started a thread about my way of production and my problems etc. some of you guys
gave me nice tips and feedback for my tunes.
i started to use:

Parallel processing
sidechain compressing
using EQ

I still use fl studio but i also got ableton live 8 lite ... not really complete and not my favorite(because i have no idea how to really use it :D)
do you think i should switch to ableton instead of fl studio?

the quality of my tracks are better now as i think and i got some nice ideas but i if you take a look at my soundcloud profile you will notice that every track basicly sounds the same. i try to learn more about massive and actually i know how to do a wobble and so on but im not a pro or even advanced educated :D
i want more atmosphere and a better quality. my drums does not really sound real or authentic and so on.
i often listen to noisia ... the drums are perfect.
i will get very nice active monitor speakers in a month but i dont think that this enhance my skills :D
feedback please. what would you improve?!

That is my latest track btw:

For the drums making them sound real is mainly about sample choice (other things such as changing the velocities and the swing help too but are not as important imo). Did you kick drum sound like that at first or did you add some effects? It sounds really weird and bubbly

Also a more interesting hihat/percussion track would really help

Why switch DAWs just as you are starting to learn FL? Ableton won't make you a better producer, nor will it make your tracks better.

It should definitely help with sound design and mixing... ultimately improving your tracks.

As for aiming to be Noisia... work hard for the next 5 years then come back and make another post :6:

"Atmosphere and quality" is subjective but something I have come to understand about getting more of a unique sound in your tunes is actually a lot to do with the imperfections in your sample choices and sound design. What I'm refering to here is timbre, in music timbre is everything. While it's often seen as good practice to attempt crafting very clinical and professional stuff, unless a good feel for personal character is seeded in to the sound everything will turn out very sterile and lacking in that something special.

What I'm saying is try to throw caution to the wind a little and use sounds you might not usually think of using. When done correctly all the little imperfections and unique timbres in your palette will give tracks that individuality and persona you're looking for.

A lot of people seem to think that certain DAWs have an inherent superiority somehow, and that a tune made in Ableton, will just sound better than the same tune made in FL 'cause Ableton has special magic in it that makes it sound better.

Stay with FL mate, Ableton is good, but if you have gotten used to FL all you are doing is wasting time learning a new sequencer if you ask me.

Invest in some new plug ins instead, that's more likely to improve your sound.
Melodic deepness from my mind.

The track had some really intresting features, you should add some sub-bass though. And maybe try to amplify some elements and compress/limit the shit out of your mix, since it's dubstep (and let's be honest, dubstep sort of needs it... or at least this type of dubstep)... :4:
And i'm not really pro at this sort of stuff, but maybe you should run it through some analog gear... ''to add some air/depth in your mix''.
keep it up! :i:

I say this a lot, but I think a large part of character in samples comes from not using sample packs. Easiest is recording your own sounds, followed by stealing from music and other media, then synthesising your own.
