after reading this thread im definately going to get a pair of headphones!

im getting customs next week.....

last week was the worst experience of my life

i played 2 nights in a row on hefty systems with monitors blasting (no more)

ive had a weird ear thing for about 6months....anyway

the sunday night, i woke up suddenly, my head was swayin side to side.

it felt like id smoke a spliff after a bottle of scotch

i threw u for 7hrs and ended up in A&E for another 6hrs on IV drip and loads of tests ec

basically ive had intense vertigo for a week and my antibiotics have just kicked in.

i blame a lot of it on standing in front of a fuck off rig for hours on end and mixing for endless hours at home at stupid volumes in the headphones.

do ur ears a favour, get customs coz last week, urgh shit was not nice

I have custom fit plugs and they really make a difference after a long night out. When your ears are ringing non-stop mine are just fine and not fatigued at all.

So do people recommend getting them with a leash or without?

mine are without.

Hmmm... this thread really makes me want to get ear plugs haha! I always thought, if I'm paying to see this show, why see it with ear plugs? Looks like I was wrong.

^ yea me too, i like my hearing. will definately invest. my dad gets them all the time from work, will these work just aswell?? i think they are for drills/piledrivers etc..they obv work on the same princible, but how do they differ from the ones they sell ina dance?

You should invest in custom ear plugs that have filters on the ends.

If you just use standard ear plugs that you see drillers or machinist use you are killing all the sound across the spectrum.

All you will hear is a muffled mess.

Custom plugs will filter out all the very high frequencies depending on the filter that you use and leave the rest untouched.

I wonder how come that everyone in DSF has tinnitus..

I use loud power tools at work so I wear earmuffs all day. I got some tunes in mine so there is an added benefit! I damaged my ears when I was young and dumb so I have tinnitus and yeah it sucks. Not much I can do about that now. I don't like wearing plugs to the club tho. Thankfully we don't use ridiculously huge PA systems here but still I stay back from the speakers usually.

you've it slightly wrong, slightly right there.


disposable foam plugs cut much more hi-end freqs - things will sound more muffled, although I would argue that you can get used to this. the 15 quid jobbies are better, but it's still not a flat reduction in dB across the frequency range.

custom plugs for musicians NEED to make a flat reduction across the frequency range - as a musician you need to know what you're sounding like, so that your tunes sound right the punters.


To anyone prevaricating about earplugs, I would urge you to try some - buy a cheap pair of reusable ones for 10 pounds, wear them without fail to every clubnight you attend for a month, and see how you get on. Yes things will sound funny for a while, but you WILL get accustomed to this, and probably wind up preferring it.

After a month, go into a club, put your earplugs in before you get on the dancefloor, then stand in front of a speaker and take one out. I guarantee you won't like what you hear.

And I will be wearing mine tomorrow night at FILTH. I work in a loud engineering workshop and wear ear defence there, ear plugs when raving is a given for me.

i wear ear plugs on systems that are too loud/distorted. i haven't had the money to purchase customs, but for any ppl serious about producing/engineering/mastering i recommend it.

you don't realize just how much the waves are affecting you until you've gone out w/ plugs a couple times gotten used to it and then gone out w/ out them.

Na i dont hit rave's often enougth to think bout getting em tbh.
If i was hitting 1 every week or 2 a week maybe.
Tbh iv been in cars where systems have hurt my ears more :S
I think its where in a rave the system's are properly set up so its all clear, where iv been in some cars, dropped some dub and where the bass is on full it just nearly blew my ear drums lol

Ive worn earplugs when djing before if im playing an early morning set (4/5/6pm etc..) becasue its a long wait in a club with loud music.
