do NOT go out and spend 30 grand on a studio. I dont think you actually realise how lucky you are to have that kind of money at your disposal - property is definitely where its at. Do you really think you need an actual studio to do your tunes with? Believe mate, cumming all your money on studio gear might be a good idea right now but in a few years time youll think back and be like "why didnt i invest that money properly"

ok bro, im gonna go against many of the sensible anto spendin posts here so far and shitchyeah! get yaself some bloody toys!
first off make sure ya got a good room with accurate monitoring, that is essentail, do some research on baisc room acoustics and get or constuct some broadband basstraps and wall hung absorbers/diffusers (sure to be plenty of relative info on the board or soundonsound's forum http://www.soundonsound.com/forum/postl ... ard=DESIGN)
once ya got the room sounding nice and accurate ya can get yaself some sweet powered speakers, if ya dont know what to look for check out brands like mackie, dnaudio, adam ect
I reckon if ya got some dollars to spent, invest in some good fun outboard gear, if it was me id be going straight for the tube preamps, check out products for TL Audio, this sort of stuff has many software emulation attempts but ya cant beat the real thing, beautifull recoded sounds and the can make tuff sound fuckin evil when pushed hard!
If ya gonna get a mic for vocals then why not get a nice large diaphram condensor mic? these are muc more sensitive then dynamic mic and will sound much sweeter with a good vocall artist, that said though, you'll probly have to spend a bit more on some acoustics shields and bult a wee vocal room as a higher sensitivity will pick up more colour from your room and background noises from outside and inside the studio, well worth it though! if ya really wanna be flexible in ya vocal recordings get a couple of different mics for suitable for diferent vocal colours and styles, ask someone with good mic knowldge about the right combination that would suit your needs
if ya getting some outboard gear and some mics be sure to get a flexible interface with plenty of inputs and outputs too!
also handheld recorders are getting really good and lots of fun these days,
theres my wishlist mate hope it helps and sorry for not backing up all these suggestions with links, lazy i know but i guess the more ya learn and investigate ya gear before ya buys it the less dificulty you'll have when ya got 30000 squid of new gear sitting in front of ya that ya dont know how to use yet......

That's not over 1,000 worth of equipment, all digital and I'm producing without issue. Spend like 2 grand MAX and save the other 28,000 man. Everyone in here is right. I'm absolute low class and I can still produce very cheaply.. Just get the essentials and nothing else.
