The "Automation Follows Events" only applies to audio, since there's no way to officially link a MIDI track with the VST plugin track. Thats sx3... you get vst instrument channels in 5 and its all tied together - much slicker.

BTW - knew you were following my glitches on DOA - turns out my probelms are all novation automap related, without that, very stable indeed. Still not fixed yet, but c5 is def very stable. all the uads and my gfx card tan memory as well, which doesnt help, sigh... getting there tho...

Right on, good to hear you sorted it out! That sounded like a nightmare. I'm still planning on getting Cubase 5, I'm just waiting for some money to come my way in a couple of months.


I do have a couple of quick questions for you:

1) How do instrument tracks work with multichannel VSTs like Battery? Do you make a track for each channel, or what?

2) If I did things the "old way" (using the VST instrument rack and making midi tracks), is there an easier way to move and group automations or attach them to MIDI events?

3) If I make a folder track with the VST track and the midi track (again using the instrument rack), and then move an event in the folder track, does it move automations as well? One of the things I truly don't understand about SX3 is that it only moves audio or MIDI events when you do this, but automation stays where it is.

hello,
ive got a oxygen 61 and ive never used midi before tbh
how do u assign knobs and sliders to stuff im using albino 3 most of the time.
any suggestions would be really apreciated 8)

At the bottom right hand corner of the Albino interface there is a button called ECS, click it, select learn, click the dial you want to automate in Albino, then move the dial you wish to assign it to on your midi controller.

Job done.

At the bottom right hand corner of the Albino interface there is a button called ECS, click it, select learn, click the dial you want to automate in Albino, then move the dial you wish to assign it to on your midi controller.

sorry dude, missed these. Not going to be too helpful im afraid...;

1 - you can have on emidi channel and multiple outputs in battery etc, not sure how youd automate an eq for example on one channel - assume its the same as SX3...

2 - easiest way i find is to duplicate tracks, and then replace the midi/audio to copy autmoation to different tracks. The range selection tool is also well handy for this. Im sure there's a setting in the toolbar which selects/deselects 'automation follows events, so if you drag some loops over the automation follows, if not use range selection tool (should be same as SX3)

3 - not sure, never use folders, but see 2 above - im sure you can select automation follows events, prob in the PDF manual somewhere.

Nice one, thanks man!

At least in SX3, "Automation Follows Events" only really works for audio, not MIDI. For example, if I have an instance of a synth, I have to create a MIDI track for it to draw in notes. Then if I want to automate a parameter, I have to edit it in the VST track, not the MIDI one. So, there is no way to connect these two together; it doesn't consider the MIDI track an "event" to attach automation to, since it's technically another track...and as far as I can tell, there's no way to get the program to recognize it by "linking" the tracks or some option like that. I was hoping they had improved this by Version 5, as it would be a huge help for me.

ahh i see what you mean.

I do work almost exclusively in audio...

Prob easiest is to drag the vst track next to the midi track, and then you can at least grab them both at the same time, either with normal tool or range tool.

Instrument tracks in V5 apparently wrap all this in one track, which may include automation for each multi-instrument track but not tried yet. It has apparently updated the entire automation, but cus of crashes (totally fixed now BTW, but not tried reinstalling automap), not really tried it much yet. Also not sure if you can automate VST instrument inserts (eg EQ etc) as well as synth parameters (eg filter cutoff). Ill have a go when got time but crazy busy at the mo.

This one was driving me nuts all night, and I still have no idea what's going on. I'm leaning towards it being shortcircuit2's fault, as the problem seemed to be happening kind of randomly. I think this will be the last track I use sc2 in and see if this ever happens again:


"Here's the basic problem: I have three samples loaded into Shortcircuit2, each in their own channel. They are all part of the same layer, but I thought maybe this doesn't matter since they're in different channels. Maybe it does though. Anyway, what's happening is that one of the channels needs to be playing MIDI notes for any sound to play from one of the other channels. If I remove the MIDI notes or mute the MIDI channel of the sample in Shortcircuit2 Channel 1, no sound plays from Shortcircuit2 Channel 3.

However, if I mute the channel of the actual VST plugin that the sample is playing out of but let the MIDI notes play, it will play Channel 3 (the one that wouldn't play earlier unless the MIDI notes of Channel 1 were playing).


Any idea what to do about this? I feel like it has to be an issue with Cubase (I'm using SX3, by the way) since it seems to be a MIDI issue...but honestly I have no idea what's causing it or where to even start."

Shortcircuit2 is buggy as hell. The developer won't make any further changes too since the software has been discontinued.
You're better of using SC1 although that one has its bugs to. :wink:

if you click on the level in the mixer it has two appearances one with a small line which stops at the highest point of the signal and one without, thats what I use to figure out where things are peaking its pretty handy.

Just a quick one..

Cubase 5, i've somehow managed to hide my VST instrument window out of the main Cubase Window and out of reach from my mouse.
I can see where the window should be when i go to > Windows > Minimize all. But when i go to restore the Instruments window fires back off to some black hole on the bottom left of the main window. I've literally had to drop projects because of this.

Sounds like im being a total fuktard but seriously, its properly annoying and i cant tfind anyway to fix this! Any ideas?

Try changing your screens resolution. I had this all the time with the transport bar and mixers lol

Cloak & Dagger: I believe you have to copy and paste the event and the automoation will be copied as well. But this doesnt work when you drag & drop or ctrl+D the event

drives me nuts, I wish they'd have fixed that

and the multichannel vst's are pretty much the only reason to use separate MIDI tracks anymore

otherwise, it'd be all instrument tracks

still at the office now, but I am going to check on the multi midi channels within one instrument tracks, but I think it's a no go, even in C5

Tried that, im at the highest resolution, never tried to set my comp up for dual screen either.
