Accidentally watched the entire first series of House of Cards in a week. Might have to sign up to Netflix for a month to get the second now.

It's awesome. First episode didn't quite hook me in and my lady still hasn't fully warmed to it (she keeps missing all the sex, drugs and murder), but it's honestly fucking amazing. I think Frank Underwood might be even more evil than Francis Urquhart. AND HE'S A DEMOCRAT.

Though I agree with parts of that critique, that critique could be directed at a number of american shows that both fetisize politics and don't do a lot of research, whereas the main problems with house of cards are on a straight technical level. Like the wife's storyline. How can a show that has decided on a complex subject like political manipulation, decide to portray the wifes internal guilt struggle about firing some old woman, by illustrating it with a situation where she is waited on by another old woman and is reminded?
It's superficial and clumsy.

Watched the first True Detective last night and I'm undecided. Beautifully shot, well written and acted but.... I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT COPS. I think this is the same reason I couldn't get into The Wire. I need antiheroes!

I was the same to begin with.. detective shows have been done to fucking death. Its worth sticking with though, give it a minimum of 4 episodes. The creator said he was worried he'd made it too slow in the beginning and people wouldn't stick with it, but he made it slow on purpose.

Certainly didn't get hooked as quickly as I normally do to really good TV.

Also ignore the hype, ever since people jumped on the breaking bad bandwagon in the last season everyone seems to be a fucking connoisseur of good tv, its quite off putting.

I'm finally finishing up on the 3rd season of Game of Thrones, wish Jon Snow would fucking die already.

Can't decide what to start next out of Hannibal, American Horror Story or The Borgias.

The good thing is the general audience now know that to produce a really good show, it will probably have to come out of the hbo model or something similar.
The bad thing is that with both sopranos, boardwalk empire, the wire and breaking bad, people tend to hold it up to a standard it hasn't reached yet.
It's not written with the same love or scrutiny that literature or film go through.
[+] Spoiler
The wire had that going for it the first three season (imo) but completely trailed off and became self referential instead of refering to our world. Characters suddenly happen to know other characters (that obviously is just actors on a contract) and it got soapy. The way Mcnulty was brought back in, was probably because the audience liked him more than how realistic it was... Etc.

The breaking bad writers forgot the point and turned it's back on the antihero and turned him alpha. The interesting bit was left behind and it became sopranos 2.
Lost it's modern edge and became this akward revenge thing. Instead of dealing with society it excused itself by portraying a family. In the end it just felt convenient that the brother in law was DEA.

Still both were entertaining enough and better than in general.

But there's only twin peaks that can compete with film on both an aesthetic and a literal level. And that is not a question of taste.

This this this 100 times this.

AMC did a genius Breaking Bad internet marketing campaign before the second to last season. They marketed the fuck out of it all over the internet, targeting young smart people. The kind of people that are gonna become "connoisseurs of good tv" (could not have said it better myself) and push it to all their friends and hype the fuck out of it.

I mean it's a good show don't get me wrong. But there's a whole level of shows that are above breaking bad. It's not the best ever or one of the best ever, imo.

Couldn't psyche myself up for the second True Detective and started on the second series of House of Cards. Two episodes in and Yes. Fucking YES. YES WE CAN.
