Fantastic film, Pacino playing a very different role to his normal roles.. he was quite comical throughout the film.

Watched Boogie Nights (think someone mentioned it in here), was a good film.. Paul Anderson makes some long ass films, I didn't realise it was going to be that long.

Then I watched Black Dynamite again, one of my favourite films.

"Ain't nothing in the world get Black Dynamite more mad then some jive ass sucka giving smack to the kids!"

I can never remember which director is which out of:

Paul Thomas Anderson
Wes Anderson
Paul W.S. Anderson

Lincoln was really engaging & criticisms of it being boring must come from the fatuous
or those jaded people who spend their lives studying the Civil War.
The acting & depiction of the age outstanding imo.

Just a teensy criticism though: there was no historical perspective re earlier abolitions by the French Republic & thru Wilberforce's efforts.
Surely Lincoln's determination to get the Ammendment through was influenced by the British partial-abolition experience.
American parochialism again?

It's amendment. heh

Usually I can see where you are coming from sd5 but I can not agree with you here. The movie was poor in every sense but the acting. It shows very little about 'winning the vote' other than bribing democrats (maybe there really wasn't much more to it). The movie treats the audience as if they were morons (why did they have to place the black girl in the parliament or whatever it was called? Why were forced to live through the experience from her point of view: it was intentional and out of place, forced). The failed attempt at humour is absurd and doesn't fit with the overly serious overtones. The dialogue is tedious and is only enjoyable when one focusses on DD Lewis flawless performance. I found the only particle of light to be Tommy Lee Jones.

I think it was a boring movie and if you are going to see any movie about slavery this year, make it Django...it's not a masterpiece but at least you'll be awake.

thanks
btw, did you notice Lincoln's use of the word "emend" in the scene where he was sending a telegram to delay the Southern Commission?
I thought the writing well reflected the formality of language of the day.

Gunna have to disagree. As to the humour... homespun jokes & gentle riposte were probably savoured more in those times unjaded by 60 years of sitcoms. And I didn't feel like I was being treated like a moron (for once) by a major studio film but was allowed to listen to extended conversations (of importance) and the intervening silences.

So good. You can see all the big names on the cover except for James Gandolfini. Absolutely nailed his role. Samuel L Jackson too! Tarantino wrote it, so no I guess no surprise there
