Re: Post your unpopular opinions.. NSFW
ukhh peaked early 2000s imo but still some good bits about
Re: Post your unpopular opinions.. NSFW
While there is still a lot I don't like by him and that live band thing he does at the moment is so shit he really does have some good tracks for sure. Definitely classes as one of exceptions.PinUp wrote:jehst is one the few exceptions IMO
And yeah I still can't see why everyone has the attitude that hip hop has to be one specific thing. The whole spectrum is what makes it entertaining. All serious stuff and nothing else or all silly shit and nothing else are both equally boring prospects in my eyes
EDIT: Also Braintax to me has always just sounded really dumb on the mic. I mean there's just something awkward about the combination of his accent plus the general flow his rapping has that makes it sound stupid which is a shame

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.. NSFW
I appreciate that post, Phigure - it put some things in perspective for me.
I suppose it was silly for me to think that hip hop died on it's arse based on my limited knowledge of the post-2003 output. I just see a lot of these guys posted on here and i'm too old/cantankerous to be bothered to work out if it's one big in-joke or if people actually like it. In reality it seems to be a bit of both.
I'm not trying to have a go at what people like it's just yet another dsf post of 'old was better'.
It's not as if I don't have the inclination to search out the "real" modern stuff it's just I don't have the time, and when a lot of what is presented to me is a not-serious-but-not-trolling-but-really-he's-quite-good type deal I just cba and go and listen to Liquid Swords etc.

How come? Haven't seen him live with the band yet but i would've thought it'd make a decent change from the standard: 'DJ/scratch out of the tune halfway through, next tune-repeat-' setup.wolf89 wrote:While there is still a lot I don't like by him and that live band thing he does at the moment is so shit he really does have some good tracks for sure. Live hip-hop with a band has been great each time i've seen it

Finding decent Hip Hop has always meant digging - when I was a kid listening to Wu, PE and Cube it was Kris Kross, Hammer and Ice doing the biggest numbers. 10 years ago it was 50 Cent, Ja Rule and Nelly dominating the charts, but Hip Hop was still healthy enough according to Dilated Peoples, J5 and Nappy Roots.... it's par for the course in a single 'genre' that, by it's own definition, can encompass almost any artistic influence.

As far as UK stuff goes I can't get enough of Rhyme Asylum, yes I know it's REALLY over the top horrorcore type stuff but some of the wordplay is just fucking ridiculous, their FITB was big as well:
*disclaimer* I really know very little about hip hop outside of what a few mates have shown me

Digging was a lot easier when we were kids imo. The internet has made it so there is sooo much shit to sift through..magma wrote:Finding decent Hip Hop has always meant digging.
Yeah there was a layer of bubblegum you had to scratch through back in the day but now you need a jack-hammer and some next mining equipment - canaries and all sorts.
@Murky - you know me too well!

Also. I would say people are too precious over the genre. Yes I like hearing good rappers who can write interesting lyrics and I feel that it's unfortunate that there are becoming less rappers who really blow me away in that respect but if I'm in a club smashing some beers in then all you want is music that mirrors that. Also I'd rather hear someone saying something entertaining that makes me laugh than a lot of the painfully too try hard "deep" rappers about these days. Plus the worst thing ever is the "I listen to real hip hop because I have a Jurassic 5 CD, all modern rap is awful" brigade. I'd rather listen to Gucci Mane make fart sounds with his armpit for an hour than hear another white guy in a beanie and baggy trousers rap about how they make real hip hop over a load of played out straight obvious loops from funk records.
Seriously if you can't enjoy shit like Keef you're taking yourself way too seriously. Yeah I love "real" hip hop too (listening to Lifestylez right now), but there's a time and a place. Sometimes I'm just in the mood to have fun and get hype, so I put on Duflocka Rant 2 or Back From Tha Dead. No one's comparing those guys to stuff like Tribe, so don't even try. They're two completely different things. I love ignorant shit as much as I love "real" shit, just in different ways, and it doesn't automatically make my intelligence lower because of it.

His flow is sluggish and monotonous to me, his beats are boring and derivative as fuck & he seems pretty devoid of talent. I'm sure theres a context where his tunes go off but nah not for me tbh
