I plan on re-watching them both at some point, I'll probably give I Stand Alone a go too. Of the two I've seen Irreversible is the one I'm more interested in going back to. Enter The Void needed tighter editing, imo. Felt very flabby.
Noe just seems to me like a textbook case of style over substance.

Just re-watched Irreversible and my opinion hasn't really changed.
From a technical angle I love it; the use of infrasound, colour, the camera, strobing, the reverse chronology etc is all wicked but the rest of the film is so thin & flimsy. None of the characters were particularly likeable and all suffered from being pretty one dimensional and undeveloped. Didn't really make me feel anything other than guilty for not feeling anything.

great film. the directors other work is awesome as well.
Will have a look on that one. I must say this movie was not what I expected at all.
Have seen it 3 times now. I'm having a Toby Kebbel movie weekend this week.
Will skip the veteran this time, terrible ending.

^Is that the one where he's fairly racist towards white people.... or is that all of his stand ups?

Yeah, that's pretty much all of them. Well, it's more the obsession with the differences between the races... that every American stand up seems to have copied ever since.
A great and important man, but recent viewings have made me feel a bit... awkward... definitely of his time.

Exactly.
I love his films, loath his stand up.

Really?
I don't find any of the material to be any different to this angle:

I wouldn't say he's being particularaly racist in most of his standup, he had white wive(S)? (I think he got married 7 times though!) and it was at a time when segregation would be in his living memory.....so taking the piss of how white guys walk doesn't seem that offensive in context.

....and beat most of his wives, and grew up in his gran's brothel- his mum was a prostitute, he was molested and beaten. Suprised there hasn't been a biographical film yet.

Yeah, which is why I backed away from the word racist and tried to say it's all just based around pointing out cultural differences and applying them to race. He wasn't saying Black is Best or White is Worst... I don't think he hated white people - he'd just seen a LOT of bad shit done in the white man's name. His observations are probably really funny when you're part of a very recently racist society - Richard Pryor was hilarious, relevant, important, even essential in his time - but when comedians have been following in his footsteps for decades; perpetuating latent racism by continually confusing the public about the differences between skin colour and culture, it gets a bit tired. I approve almost entirely of his material, but he should be regarded as historical record rather than copied by every performer with a genetic tan.
I watched some of his early bits and pieces with my lady the other week... we just sat there saying "Fuck, I'm glad we live in 2013."

There is a difference between saying racist things and being a racist. Richard Pryor and Louis CK had kids to woman of a different race, so it's hard to define them as racist. If you don't get that type of comedy then, you've missed the point of it.
