I tried Reaper for a few days, the customisation options are huge. Again, it would probably take weeks to learn what I need and don't need.

If you use your own samples - Press "edit" and drag in your samples.
Close the window and you have your samples loaded into the piano roll, ready to be put in as midi.
If you want to use the built in kits: Factory > Drums & Percussion and choose a kit.
Can't be much faster than that, I haven't tried Ableton drum racks though, how do they work?

alright, tried it, its cool but in my opinion the finder is a bit chunky to browse samples.. drum racks are the easiest thing ever made. you just have your ableton browser and can quickly listen to all da samples, and if you like one, just drag it into one free slot. it has 16 free slots but you can scroll up and down and then you have even more! when you doubleclick your sample, then you can edit basic things like attack, pitch, fliters and stuff and you also see the waveform. i dont know, its maybe not as extensive as ultrabeat or esx24 but it's quick and simple, it lets you get down your ideas quickly. and that's what it's all about imo! you should try it out, everything works in one window and its so much less clicking and moving things.

I love Logic but the audio finder on it sucks harddddd.

I use the 3rd party AudioFinder program to hunt for sounds and then drag em in.

I don't understand why everyone has such trouble with this. There's a media browser that you open and you can scroll through your sample library (super fast if you took the time to organize yours) and drag what you like to EXS24. Done. I couldn't imagine it being any easier.

What makes the drum racks that awesome isn't the ability to drag sounds in to it, you can pretty much set up simpler or sampler to work better with just quick drum kit auditioning.
No, the real strengh lies in the ability to host multiple vst's and au's at the same time. It's like it quick-freezes every slot after u've edited it, because the drum rack don't really take up a lot of RAM and the latency is like the lowest iv'e seen when it come's to pad mashing apps. Of course u will experience some RAM lossage if u load an alchemy in to every single slot...

You can pretty much build an entire track in the drum rack and it would keep everything tidy and organized. That's what makes it rly cool!
It's the ultimate tool for pad mashers!..

Still 'tho, Logic owns Ableton (you can't argue with the sample editing in Logic)...

You totally missed the point. I have created controls that do what would take several key presses in one key press. That's the power of macros in Cubase. I use Ableton too and the interface is great out of the box, but there is no way to set up a list of commands.

Supposing I was processing a lot of audio. Using offline processing, I could set up a command where I:

Remove DC offset.
Normalize.
Highpass at 50Hz with an EQ of my choice.
Bounce selection and replace.

I could assign that to any key I want. That's just an example.

If you can padmash/finger drum a whole song then there's not rly much to add. Sometimes i start of with the drum rack and build the whole song around it, but I still find it easier to just put the sounds over to the mpc... a bit more relaxing in a way, getting away from the pc...

Will probably get a bashing for this, but after experimenting with a few, they all definitely don't sound the same. I've been using Ableton for the past 4 years, Seriously for the past 2. I know the interface back to front and my workflow on it is as fast as anything. For me, my mixes all sound the same as the end product. Where as in Logic, i mix exactly the same, even use a lot of the same Plugins, and the end product is much more prestige. I've said this too a few people now. Some people agree, some people disagree.

Are you comparing 2 different projects?

Put a few wavs into each daw and sum them to a stereo wav file. Make sure all the render settings are identical. The outputted files should sound identical as well.








Unless you render it from Reaper, in which case it'll sound twelve to seventeen times better.

That is what i've exactly done. It seems as if when bounced from logic, the high mids/ high end is a bit less raw.




It's quite easy to tell what DAW you're using with that last statement...

Agree or disagree?

Agree - it's probably the automation delay compensation problem. Ableton doesn't compensate the automation, so when you have a few plugins that add latency, the automation slips out of time. The more plugins you add, the further the sound goes from how you intended.
