Yeah I really don't agree Laszlo and only really enjoyed the intro/ the beginning of kill bill.

There's homage and then there's pastiche but both terms are a bit too french to be talking about at this hour.
But it's sort of the same distinction between Django and kill bill.

Homage - Special honor or respect shown publicly.
Pastiche - An artistic work in a style that imitates that of another work, artist, or period.

By the above definitions at least, TMWTIF is at best a poor homage to 'wire-fu' movies and a pastiche of Kill Bill (a worthy homage of TMA movies).

I would say a pastiche usually is an homage to something that is thought of as campy or a guilty pleasure.
It can either have a subject that is serious and have it appear silly or light - like for example 'allo 'allo where there's still a 'serious' ww2 context and just as an example, not necessarily m.a.s.h. where you have the non-comical deaths and drama.
- Or it can be the opposite where you try to look unironically at something camp - thats the more common approach I guess.

OK, now we're (i'm) getting somewhere. So you're saying that, in your opinion and that of some other people, Kung Fu films are camp. Some were (deliberately so which made a whole sub genre) most weren't, but I can see how people would see them as such now .
Judging by his favourite MA films and certain things he said in interviews I get the feeling that that isn't what RZA was going for with this.

You know, good for you that you were able to enjoy it for what it was but for me it was a let down. Not a massive one because I didn't have high expectations anyway but a let down none the less.

Yeah the old ones - like when Bruce Lee steals and eats 8 soups on a tray while fighting - type of thing.
There's an honesty to 'camp' - that I personally prefer over the very calculated films that follow a certain formula, because there's not as many attempts from the director, to try to herd/control you - like with sad violins, one liners or quick editing etc. which quickly becomes condescending and gets me to talk to the screen like an even bigger moron than the director probably is.
I think generally a lot of people think that if something is funny/campy- it's probably a bit stupid, which is their loss obviously.

I personally thought ghost dog was somewhat of a let down, because of how it took in so many of those traits I'd enjoyed from those films without having a similar tone and just using that 'flavouring' as a way to show how Forest Whitaker was different/alienated, even though he was a 'violent criminal' aswell.
So in the context of that film and Rza being involved with a new film, I really liked how silly it was and I really liked Russel Crowe's fat idiot character too.

Yeah, I think you are right in thinking that Rza actually takes it a bit more serious than the average guy.
But at the same time he probably thinks he still has to represent that to a certain extent to preserve the 'serious' side and the idea that wu take inspiration from religion/philosophy and that it isn't just gimmick.

I hate to be pedantic but I don't think Bruce Lee ever played the sort of character that would steal something (maybe pre Big Boss? I'm not really up on those films). Are you thinking of the beginning of Way of the Dragon where he can read the menu in a restaurant and ends up getting the soups?
But yeah, I get your point - there certainly was a lot of comedy in the old (Cantonese) MA films but the fighting was always serious. That was until 1978 when Yuen Woo-ping started working with Jackie Chan and the comedy was incorporated into the fights.

Aw, I really liked Ghost Dog, like, a lot - thought it was very unique and a near masterpiece. My only gripe in the one-sided representation of the Hagakure, but I suppose you can only fit so much into a film..
As for the religion/philosophy aspect of TMWTIF - I think that was my favourite part of the film. True wisdom being handed down by his G-ness Gordon Liu.

It's obvious you have more than a passing interest in cinema and we even have a shared liking for choice of films - curious that we have such different opinions..

fuckng hell, Audition... I thought that ending was over the top. yeah i get it, she's fucked in the head but still good movie overall though

That is a South African actor portraying a person from joburg.

seven psychopaths

had only watched snatch and lock stock beforehand, they good movies
mean machine was pretty good for a saturday night matinee
kiss kiss bang bang 8/10, liked it pretty much and downey was funny
seven psychopaths positively surprised me

Seven Psychopaths is a great film IMO, good for a re watch as well.

This weekend I watched:

A Fish Called Wanda - 6/10 not as funny as I remember it being, Jamie Lee Curtis is NOT fit despite what Hollywood producers have been saying for years.
Shaun of the Dead - 8/10 great film, only bought down by the fact that I've watched so many times
Hot Tub Time Machine - 7/10 good for a laugh, nothing incredible
James and the Giant Peach - 8/10 bought back a lot of childhood memories, I'm weirdly attracted to Miss Spider as well
The Usual Suspects - 9/10 watched it last week, gave it a second watch to try and pick holes in it. Still excellent.
