drug abuse and homelessness is a social problem, it's not like they want to live like that. they might not be "crazy", but the vast majority of homeless do have a mental illness, often more subtle than being "off the rails" crazy, that leads to them not being able to function normally in society and end up homeless. that, or they had traumatic experiences in their past that led them to this life

im not gonna deny that it's vastly over diagnosed, but it definitely exists. i think the name isn't helpful either, it's a lot more complex than just "attention deficit". attention deficit is a secondary symptom that doesn't even necessarily exist in a lot of ADHD individuals, the root issue is the balance of certain neurotransmitters, which has been proven to be connected to genetic factors in a lot of cases (other times it's the result of environmental factors due to the plasticity of the brain).

a lot of it has to do with dopamine and that ADHD brains are more wired for exploratory behavior because it prefers new and exciting experiences, as opposed to familiar, more boring ones. this also leads to impulsivity and generally favoring things that are immediately rewarding rather than rewarding in the long term. it manifests in different ways, some people end up with hyperactivity, others simply have a harder time focusing on things when their balance of chemicals in the brain changes throughout the day. like i said, the name "attention deficit hyperactive disorder" is a misnomer

human populations who migrated out of africa and europe tens of thousands of years ago and then across the other continents have been shown to have a much higher frequency of one of the genes highly correlated with ADHD (DRD4-7R). their drive for new experiences is a factor that helped humanity to spread over the globe like it did. it's also more common among nomads, and another interesting thing is that individuals with that gene tend to be healthier when living a nomadic life rather than those who settled in one location

i used to think it was a load of shit too up until a few years ago, until in a late night binge of random wikipedia articles, i ended up reading the article on ADHD and realizing why, no matter how hard i try, sometimes it'll take me 10 hours to do something i should be able to do in 2. and why i have such a caffeine habit - i'd been unknowingly self medicating for most of my life. the symptoms fit me to a T, i got medication from a doc, and the difference it made is immense. it's like flipping a switch in my brain, and all of a sudden i can do certain tasks that i had normally struggled with.

eventually, unrelated to ADHD, i got my genome analysed for shits and giggles, and when I thought to look for it, I did end up having the DRD4-7R gene I mentioned. goes to show it's not just some invented condition.

it's easy to say shit like that when you don't actually have any experience with it. i'm just as critical of pharmaceutical companies, and surely they do push doctors to overdiagnose it so they can make more money. while it can be the result of poor parenting in a lot of cases (like i mentioned, neuroplasticity allows the brain to wire itself in different ways depending on its environment), it's just as much, if not more so, due to genetic and other more complex factors.

it's not like pharmaceutical companies just pulled this shit out of thin air, there's also independent, peer reviewed science that's been done studying the condition, its origins, and its effects. denying it is just as silly as denying evolution.

well, like i said, for example, individuals with the gene tend to be healthier in nomadic lifestyles, but in modern society that's not really the way it works. should i go live in tents with mongolians? there's varying degrees of the condition, and some people manage to get by sort of alright without medication (such as myself). but for others it really gets in the way of everyday life, and they just can't manage to prioritize tasks, complete tasks, control impulses, etc. i don't need my medication, and i don't even use it a lot of days, but it makes my life so much easier. and for me personally, there's no negative side effects whatsoever (it also depends a lot on the drug, i've heard horrible things about ritalin).

I think ADHD shouldn't be medicated for at least into adulthood or when the symptoms have remained unchanged for a long time because ADHD symptoms can look similar to onset symptoms of psychotic disorders or bipolar disorder, that are then exacerbated by stimulant use. You don't fuck with stimulants. >.>

ADHD is overdiagnosed, especially in America. But I've known people who struggle with it and I have some very similar issues myself. ADHD is seen on brainscans and it has way more implications than just an inability to sit still. Having trouble focusing or having racing thoughts can wreak havoc on your emotions and how you deal with them and make you prone to depression or aggression. ADHD can also cause problems with sensory integration or a heightened sensitivity to sounds or other stimuli. Having a quiet dinner at a restaurant can feel like being in the middle of a crowd at a rock concert. Sleeping problems are there too, from having an overactive mind that won't shut the fuck.

You could argue that probably not every single wayward individual at the age of ten should get amphetamine treatment, ie. ritalin but that's probably it if you want to generalize.
