Bouncing midi tracks before bouncing whole song?

Is it standard production practice to bounce your midi tracks into audio before you bounce the whole project/song?

If it is, what are the benefits/why do people do this.

to focus on mixing instead of tweaking the automation

also you can cut up, stutter, reverse, shorten, etc or anything else you can do with audio

I usually do this. Can fuck with it (audio) more.

basically what hurling said

and also, having instances of synths open eats at the CPU (at least for me with my comp, which is "middle aged")

once a tune is mostly 'written' i bounce everything down to stems and mix in a new session; changes the focus.

i also tend to run the majority of the softsynth tracks thru hardware (mic pres/ limiter/ compressor and sometimes and aphex exciter) to really get some balls on 'em.

or not.

but i do like having a 'mix' session and a 'writing' session.

used to do this on logic 5 cos the computer couldn't play the tracks all the way through otherwise!

(....then we'd had to bounce down again into 5 or 6 audio tracks cos the computer still couldn't play it through without glitching  )

LMAO logic 5.....my homeboy used to have this . I used to use this shit.

I remember we had no clue how to bounce the midi instruments to audio. the manual is beyond dense and the program was generally pretty rough.

obviously it must have changed since then

yeah, now there's a bounce button. just solo the tracks you want as audio and bounce.

wha?? I hadn't heard about that feature. but I have to stay away from those product announcements. I've lost alot of time hunting the perfect setup when I should have been making music. I'll prolly stick with 8 awhile now.

no more chasing dragons. Time to really get to know the beast around me.

I do this sometimes as well. I'll bounce the tune into stems as needed, then edit/glitch/chop/whatever the stems as I feel.

you don't HAVE to do it that way, but you can.

depends how your pc stacks up really i remember doing this in 2001/02 to get 5x z3ta's working in a track without a struggle but there's no reason i'd do it now

my pc kicks butt :)
