I want a firewire interface for my laptop, I'm looking at a Saphire LE, but it uses firewire 400 and my Macbook only has one firewire 800 port. Can anyone say if I'll be able to use a conversion cable to get this to work?

i have an apogee duet. it is sexy and sounds great.

to answer your question... i don't know, but if you could get something with firewire 800 it would be a heaps better option. less potential problems, ya get me?

almost 100 percent certain u'll b able2 use an 800 to 400 lead (i have to, for daisy chaining a couple of drives), but its a bit of a waste of an 800 port.

using a duet here too. no complaints whatsoever.

You'll be fine using a 400 800 converter. FW400 interfaces are far more common than 800.

As for a recommendation, MOTU Ultralite hits the spot for me.

presonus inspire if your on a budget and only recording 1-2 ppl

fuck presonus motu and apogee round same price
mac bs is always costly though

apogee duets are nice, they have great converters in them

bit pricey tho if you aren't planning on recording much audio, plus they have no MIDI if your thinking of using hardware

saffires are a good bet i reckon, not too expensive and mine has treated me well for years

A friend of mine purchased a Moto traveler MK3 for his Powerbook and he seems very pleased with it (he is also a sound engineer) as well as doing live performance with it, as the Motu was mentioned I thought I would suggest it.

Cool. I'm glad I'll be able to make this work. I checked out the Apogee duet. It's a bit too expensive for me, and it doesn't have the extra firewire port to daisy chain devices, so I think I'll stick with the Safire LE. Does anyone have experience with using it under OS 10.5?

I had a Saffire LE, was good, was fine under 10.5. Got a a Presonus Firebox now.
