Any Logic Users Creating Dubstep? (what do you use?)

I was just wondering what other logic users use to create their tunes? recommended plugins, instruments, etc.

I use:

- Massive Mainly (sometimes albino)
- love the tape delay and stereo delay
- and there is a free plugin called dubdelay which i also use
- and then i just put random audio effects on over the top e.g crackling, radio tuning, etc

To be honest that all i really use which is why i posted this thread to find out what other people use so i can give that ago. I've not been writing dubstep for very long, so I'm looking to build my knowledge.

Also if anyone knows any good (preferably free) sample libraries for those random sound clips. e.g Bar 9 - Shaolin "now you are going to die" (i may post this in another thread)

With that stuff you should be sweet to make dubstep bro. Heaps of threads of free plug ins on this forum if you use the search function up at the top of the page if you feel you need more. Bit annoying being an apple user cause heaps of VSTs are PC only. For samples I use a program called audio hijack (free demo) to steal samples, sounds, noises off most things. Get the 808 sample pack. Get a mic and record yourself smashing shit. Also websites such as http://www.reelwavs.com for movie samples etc.

I use Massive for my sub bass, but asides from that it's pretty inconsistent what synths I use. The sculpture synth in logic is terribly underused, some great noises out of that thing.

albino and a ton of samples. i underuse logic's built in synths mainly because I'm more comfortable programing albino. however i used EXS24 as my main sampler and use the built in, eq's, compressors, reverb etc regularly

what are the copy write issues with taking samples like that?

hmmm would depend on country i guess? but i know in NZ needs to be substantial copying. in the US you have the fair use doctrine. if you stole one line from a movie that definitely would not qualify as copyright infringement in both those countries. also heaps of people are doing it, are they gunna chase us all? maybe i guess haha. also lots of the shit you steal you make unrecognizable through messing with it (which is half the fun anyway), or you couldn't tell where it came from anyway e.g. a gun shot.

ES1 is deadly for bass wobbles, easy setting to get started, choose sub oscilator (square wave) put cut off 3/4 open, lfo to cutoff 1/4 or 1/8 add analog to 30% a bit of release, run through autofilter (add distortion, 100% fatness, 8 pole).

I'm a big fan of Logic, right now I'm using the ultrabeat to program hat/percussion, as well as a sampler, used for pitching drums. It's pretty crazy the stuff you can do with this drum machine, like adding sub tones to your kick and white noise to your snare.

@909: Nice tip on the ES1, I'll have to try that out today, cuz I know the logic synths are powerful but I just haven't sat down and really explored.

As far as software I use
Vanguard (mostly)
Massive
Audiodamage fx (all of them!)

I'm pretty sure even the old Logic plug-ins shit all over most in-house DAW plug-ins today.

Space Designer is the reverb right? The old Logic had like 5 reverb units or something, and they were serious.

The delays were serious.

I'd revert to using that if it wasnt such a buggy program lol

all the in builts are monsterous - anyone who hasn't taken enough time to get down with them should, there's alot of depth in logic

platinum verb has that serious classic dubstep verb sound

klopfgeist!

I use ultrabeat and totally love it, find myself using the stock kits quite a bit - my only complaint would be that I seem to get alot of "digital-ish" high end noise from ultrabeat .. like a faint digital crush that isn't so easy on the ears .. anyone else experience this with ultrabeat?

I'd love some quick tips to phatten my drum sound more

use the tremolo and autofilter a bit too... same with the wahwah filter (this comes in handy for weird things some times... little guitar parts and ambient pads)

the tape delay is sick, you can do some little automation tricks with the groove to get some weird sounds off the delay signal

want to try sculpture

mostly been doing everything with in-built stuff, plenty to work with!

space designer is epic now in logic 9. try some of the warped spaces for your beats and basslines, it can completely change that pre-processed digital sound into something much darker, it's amazing.

im using at the moment:

ultrabeat (for drum programming, amazing!)
surge (basslines and leads/fx)
space designer (reverb and fx)
fabfilter pro-c (awesome compression/side-chaining)
flex time (for amazing drum modding and vocals)

specifically i've been experimenting with the side-chaining in logic at the moment, it's amazingly easy compared to most environments and much better sounding too. flex time also means no more making 10 different drum loops or copy/pasting everywhere, it's amazing.

ultrabeat is an ugly, ungainly beast but extremely powerful. it's like a saab, maybe. yr not gonna get laid for using it but it keeps giving up tricks that you can't believe are there.

(actually since this is dance music, you just might get laid).

problems w/ ultrabeat-- shit is WAY too loud in the existing kits. turn everything down, and turn your monitors up. i usually group things into auxes w/ a multiple--out instnace of UB; kicks, snares, metals, etc. eq the groups so that they sound nice and full and then send all those groups to a master drum bus.

compressor on VCA, maybe 6:1 or so, play around with the other settings, set distortion to "soft" and dial in maybe 50% or so of the compressor. instant parallel comp. toss a limiter on afterwards and see what phatness you've got.

the logic synths are all pretty sweet if you play around with them enough tbh

when it comes to drums i dont really like ultrabeat, prefer to load individual samples up in the exs24, alot easier to control single elements.
I would do the same as TeReKeTe with aux's etc but, personally i find it quicker to load hits up in a sampler!

i love the tape delay....really need to stop using it, but its an addiction lol

Digging the ultrabeat as a sampler for simple drum kits.

But yeah, lately I've been using es2 for all my bases, record, slice in the arrange window, drag to exs.

Also this thread should be merged with the logic Q&A, lots of good logic advise in this thread.

Fellow Logicians;

I'm using

Battery 3 for drum hits and all samples
Predator for bass and synth lines
Blue for pads

Camel Phat & Camel Space over the top of these for added madness

And that's pretty much it!

I say i'm using those. I actually never have time to make beats any more. ARGH I HATE THE 9-5
