I only hard about it today, after someone mentioned it in passing...

The only DAW programs I know about and have tried are:

Renoise (mental but great if you used octmed or other trackers),
Reason (great you've used lots of real life gear),
Cubase (does the job but nothing special),
Logic (powerful but not easy to learn),

So how does reaper stack up against these? It looks a little like Logic which is no bad thing... Does it offer anything that Logic doesn't?

It is cheap.

The built in FX are crap, but it supports VSTs and DX plugins, so who cares?

It does time stretching, and all that jazz really easily, and the routing system is really really easy...

The question you have to ask yourself is, 'why would you spend ridiculous money on Cubase etc' when you could get Reaper?

No dongles, no platform dependancy, no specific soundcards required, no silly limitations like Reason where oyu can't use plugins or record audio etc etc.....

can u use ur computer keyboard in it to play notes. that is all i want because i dont have a midi keyboard. this is the only reason i stick with fl. ableton has it but i like the way the keys are laid out in fl better

Yes you can do this.

On the sequencer track that you wish to 'play' with your keyboard, assign the midi to 'virtual midi keyboard' from the 'midi inputs' submenu. Next, press 'Alt-B' to show the virtual midi keyboard (or click on 'show virtual midi keyboard from the 'view' menu).

Your computer keyboard should now be assigned to your synth so you can play notes.

And its a 5mb download

oh and OP renoise with all the vid tutorials and whole tutorial side to site can get you tracking proficently in about a weeks time and trust me it's a much quicker workflow than a traditional sequencer and allows for more automation control least imo

i grew up on trackers and an amiga and c64 hell still using c64 for mssiah cart
would love hex style vertical editing in a current sequencer besides buzz or energy xt so i had a hybrid interface

most built ins are crap via presets but with self adjust can be godsends
ie my fave from cubase quad

Offset commands are the work of the devil. If only renoise could do actual time-stretching, I wouldn't have to do it the ghetto way.
