Anyone own one of these?
How would you rate it on a scale of 1-10 and how does it compare to other similar synths in the price bracket?

It all depends on which one, doesn't it?

I've only got one of the original ones. The ER-1. It's a neato analoguesque modeling drum machine that sounds fairly uniquish. I could easily do the same in software now, but it has a nice feel. I keep it mainly for voodoo reasons.

The synth they released at the same time, the ES-1, was complete waste and every fucking sound managed to sound and feel the same. I gave it away to somebody that had more patience than me.

I don't know about the other units. I generally don't touch hardware unless it offers something unique that can't be replicated in software.

i would love one...

thinking about picking up the original drum machine for cheap

its great to have software and vsts, but automapping and custom midi only goes so far compared to something thats dedicated to be the same everytime... get things memorized and pump out 3 minute sessions that you can mix in with the rest of the song.

hardware voodoo for the win

i'd have to ask misk might be in original one but remember him mentioning you can upgrade the tubes for a better sound in either that or something similar price range from korg

I've got the ESX-1 with tubes, it does sound nice with no mods.

If my tube go then I may upgrade them but right now I'm happy with it.

Great for synth and drum parts

i got the MX1, its one of the the best grooveboxes around for dubstep i think,
u can get allkids of crazy basslines out of it.

if u havent got the money for a real good drumcomputer and a good synth, just take this one m8

(check my myspace, i got an acces virus, but most of the basslines on there are still made by the electribe)

I like the electribes, in fact I think I am going to take the hardware route, and I hopefully will be getting my mc-307 today to start my rig.
Anyone heard of Novatron? I just saw him in Washington and loved every minute of it. Nice dubstep / electro and nice filthy sounds coming out of that there setup.

I have the older ones...

ER-Drum synth
EA-Synth
EM-ROM based sounds

They are pretty damn fun to play around with. I do not use the EM much these days as I find it a bit limiting. But use the other two quite a bit to write full pieces or to accentuate other gear etc.

They can be gotten fairly cheap these days and are definitly worth playing around with if it is something you are interested in. If nothing else you could make some pretty nice samples and then off load the box.

i've got the emx, and the esx. they're cool, and if i was doing straight techno, or minimal, they'd be amazing. You've gotta be pretty clever to make over shuffled and disheveled beats like i tend to make, but i make it work.

Deadly Habit's right, you can replace the tubes, and i did this on my emx. it sounds thick as fuck now that ive done it, and the tubes are like $20 a piece. theres a few tutorials for the process on the korg electribe forums, so if you've got one, check it out. It really makes them sound a LOT better. more warm, and less distorted. more "punch" too.

I'd say the biggest issue i have with it is the sequencer, since it's ALWAYS quantized, but you like anything, the more limited you are, the more opportunities for creativity you have.

if i had to choose now, id pick up an emx.

Right now I just have the EMX, and have been tempted to get the ESX also, but I think the whole hassle of copying over samples to a card means it would be easier to use the computer as a sampler...

Still, for doing gigs these things kick ass... modeselektor use the EMX I think...

Also, if you want to beat the 16th bar quantize thing, pattern to 32 beats instead.

Finally, do you have a link to changing the tubes or even an electribe forum? I've tried google but I only found things like youtube vids of poeple jamming away on the emx/esx...

I'm tempted to give the tube swap a go now, after what you said... I wasn't really sure if it would make much difference.

ive got an original ea1 if anyone wants it. ill take 40£ plus whatever it costs for delivery, uk only . (no box or manual, not that you need one, can prob find one online)

not much use for anything but sub bass (one thing it does very well). can get some fucked up analogue r2d2 being bummed by a stormtrooper style screaches from it with a bit of work though.
