logic synths - patchmaking tips..?

been usin logic a while now, pretty much got my head round it, especially when it comes to making beats - the esx24 and ultrabeat with the compression n eq on offer makes for quite a combination.. but with the synths (es1,es2 etc) im kind of stuck. ->

I can make standard low subby bass sounds (sine wave with a tiny bit of lfo or what have you) but other than that i find if i use anything other than sine waves i get really , really cheap sounding plasticky sort of gimmick rave stab type sounds, especially on the es2...

how would i go about getting the sort of melodic type lead sounds heard on some kode9/cyrus/blackdown tunes?? i.e quite lyrical, dark but not atonal/gnarly... as it is i just use sine waves, one of the two pitched up plus 7 or 5 (or any nice interval)... the analog slider on the es2 is suprisingly good tho , always have that up for lead sounds, ditto a touch of glide works nicely... again its almost as if using anywave BUT sine makes it sound instantly shit - am i missing something!!??

the presets really are a joke though , standardly.... seem suited to chipmunk vocaled euro dance shiiiit.

safe/cheers for any advice in advance...

Yeah, bass sounds are tricky. I've always found that stock sounds with and synth, hardware or software are just pure cheeze wiz.

If anyone has any good tips on this, I'm interested too.

I've been using Reaktor with Logic and I can get a decent bass sound in one of it's synths (sorry, not in front of it right now) but I have trouble changing the quality of it much without making it sound like rubbish.

So I guess another question would be, anyone got any tips on specific softh synths that are particularly good for making a wide range of bass sounds?

mate what you need to be looking at is filters, i dont know logic but i do know synths

try this: load up a saw wave - yeah sounds pretty horrid doesnt it, so load up two (sounds the same but louder i guess) ok now detune one +4 cents and detune the other -4 cents (oo sounds like its phasing a little bit but its fucking horrid sound)

stick a low pass filter on it and play around with the cutoff (wow without all those highs it doesnt sound so nasty now) play with the resonance a little bit

try some effects etc....

you aint gonna get anywhere without filters
