the only way you can make money from releasing electronic music is by owning your own label.

You can release your own but unless you are fucking Skream you aren't going to sell anything. I have my own label and release my own tunes but no solely and I don't exclusively put out on my label either. IMO if other labels won't sign your stuff then it probably isn't worth putting out. In my case I figure when I have a decent following as an artist and a decent following as a label it will be a real good thing to release my own and get all of the royalties.

If you can run a website and code an online shop, is there anything more you really need in order to run a label?

Well....If you tunes will sell, they will sell.

Maybe this person who told you this did sell well but had some bad label experience? I for one have sold pretty well but got fucked around by 2 labels...So I am releasing my own stuff and releasing a few mates stuff, primarily to cut out the bullshit what most digi-labels have (and some label who put out vinyl at that)

but in all honesty, what Abz said was true - unless labels want to sign you, theres no point starting you own.

Tracks to put out would be good.

No real legalities are needed unless you're working with clearing samples and what not.

A lot of money you're willing to lose...
And a lot of time.. you need to promote, promote, promote. A good (maybe amazing) first couple of releases, including something by someone who is established can help loads... basically something that makes you stand out from the 100 other labels that started up the same month.
