HEAVY, SLOW, DRRRRRTY

For Godflesh's second formal album, a new member was recruited to replace Paul Neville (though in an odd twist he appears on the first three minutes of "Love, Hate (Slugbaiting)," in fact a live sample of the old band he, Broadrick and Green used to be in, the Fall of Because). The choice was an inspired one - Robert Hampson of Loop, then dissolving that band and beginning his initial work as Main. Loop and Godflesh had already toured together and put out a very rare split single where each band covered the other, a mutual appreciation society that led to Hampson's recruitment. He only appears on half the album's tracks, but his efforts on "I Wasn't Born to Follow" and "Don't Bring Me Flowers" slot in very nicely with the band's philosophy of overwhelming if sometimes beautiful noise (the intro to the latter is actually quite lovely). Broadrick himself expressed disappointment with both Pure and the Cold World EP, as both were recorded on eight-track machines and didn't have the full room for experimenting that he wanted. The end results are still worthy stuff, though, even if opening song "Spite" has one of the jauntiest hip-hop breaks yet used by the band. In terms of grinding guitars and shouted vocals, though, it's pure Godflesh ire. The title track makes an even more explicit nod to the culture of turntables and breakbeats, taking rhythms from Eric B. and Rakim's "Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em." "Mothra" got selected as a single, and in ways it is surprisingly commercial for the band, with a memorable main riff and drumming that for once doesn't sound like it's out to break bones and shred eardrums. "Pure II" concludes the album with a monstrous, twenty-minute track not far off from Broadrick's work as Final, only with even more threat and slow drum machine hits like distant cannon. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

This album begins with one of the most powerful songs writen by Neurosis. One of the most powerful songs writen ever. The rest of the songs on this album follow suit so well. Neurosis are a blazing band of cerebral-ability and they just conect. There's really no way I can put it other then their music infects you, clearing a path to your subconcious. Neurosis are deeply spiritual bringing to mind the mind expanding qualitys of Tool and similar to them also by being an entire original.

Anyhow to describe the music, I'd say they are a Metal/Industrial hybrid with a tribal feel that brings out a progression in thier music. Like a drum circle in where all of the drummers are unified approaching a peek that enlightens the lot.

Powerful stuff here. Their music is so entirely heavy and cathartic. A fan of Swans would probably have no trouble getting into them. This is not their best album however it is still totaly amazing, inspirational and driving. If you like this album you will then need Neurosis's most dominating album and the album that you will have needed this as an introduction for: "Through Silver In Blood"

Good luck finding a more dynamic and heavier band.

writing this is kinda rough, because it involves me racking my brain trying to find the right words to put together to explain how amazing this cd is. and it's especially hard after seeing them live [which was probably one of the best shows i've ever witnessed]. so, coming from a guy like me, i'm not sure if it means a whole lot ... but i'm willing to say this is the best isis album ever produced. there's so much intenisty combined with an insane amount of melody, not really common to past isis albums. but nonetheless, it's a GREAT path they've taken. each track has it's own individual taste of madness. you're expecting them to blare into their traditional 4 minutes of distortion and crickety sound clips, when they slap you in the face and scream at you to wake up with a barrage of rock and roll drum beats and melodious guitar strumming. don't let me stray your thinking ... they still have their beautiful cacauphonies of noise and single instrument riffs [which keep getting better and better with every album]. it was definately unexpected to hear some rock and roll mid-tempo riffs in some of these songs, but at the same time it was overwhelming that they're expanding their musical talents and pushing every ounce of ability to the limit. they throw this album in a completely different direction ... i'm willing to say it took the underground music world by hurricane. first song = 9 minutes of the best isis song ever written. traditional instrumental introduction to the song ... but NOT the traditional chugging and squealing. with a barrage of awesome chords and keyboards, even some single note picking, they catch your ear right off the bat. a little while into the song, they slow it down a little with more instrumental picking and drum+bassline accompanyment, then ... like you should expect ... here they come punching you in the crotch with a huge assault of rock and roll. and it was a little strange at first, but once you actually LISTEN to the songs, it's uncanny how awesomely the vocals match the music. hopefully this is a taste of the musical mastery isis has created in their latest album "oceanic". if you're the kind of person that, instead of buying a new release on a favorite record label you'd rather buy something new to check out ... i COMPLETELY reccomend picking up "oceanic". it's epicness is utterly life changing. go buy it now. Thanks to my buddy Chris(spinkicks for Jesus) for helping me wordsmith this masterful album into intelligeble form of human zeros and ones.

Good stuff Parson. I had the good fortune to catch Neurosis with Crash Worship a few years ago.
Good times!

This is where Scorn finally found its niche and put out a masterpiece that put earlier works to shame. Moving further away from the metal/industrial sound that typified earlier Scorn CDs; Evanescence took Harris down a much more experimental road that allowed his musical talent to shine. As always the vocals on this album are great and loaded with heavy amounts of distortion that make one feel as if in a dream. Silver Rain Fell is by far the best track on the album (but the album as a whole adds to the depth of the song and helps to make it stand out). This album is not only the best work put out by Scorn but also an example of how the band (Mick Harris) continues to grow and redefine itself. Long gone are the days of Napal Death (whose member went on to form both Scorn and Godflesh).

Sensational Swedish septet Cult of Luna returns with Salvation, a gallant eight-track, 73-minute affair. Juxtaposing the ethereal vibe of Neurosis with the sonic crush of Isis, tracks like "Vague Illusions" morph from aggressive bits of vocal shrapnel to atmospheric guitar interludes. While some may argue that the album is overall weighty and overwrought, tracks like the bone chilling "White Cell" showcase just how mighty Cult of Luna can be when the death metal world meets the prog rock realm in a battle for earth shaking metal's coveted crown. As Axl Rose once sang, you just need "a lil' patience" (and perhaps some good drugs), to fully appreciate the Gothic doom and metallic mope which Cult of Luna pristinely deliver.

Good times!

I used to see Crash Worship in SD when they lived there!

One of the best Neurosis shows I've been to was about 2002,when Savage Republic got back together the first time in like 10 years,at the Beyond The Pale festival in SF at the DNA.SR is obviously an influence on Neurosis,as Neurosis covered 'Birds Of Pork'.They went on before Neurosis and blew that show up!It was like you could even tell the guys in Neurosis were probably thinking,"How the fuck are we gonna follow that!"But,man, they were just so heavy that night.I think my ears rang for two days straight!

Why else would I bring it up! :D

Yeah...Melvins good.

Another show I just thought of was about 4 years ago or so was(get this) Hella,Locust,Lightning Bolt, and Arab On Radar at Slim's in SF.

Another good band was Scratch Acid, though I've only seen Yow with the Jesus Lizard.

By chance do you like Melt Banana?

Parson, you must know these right?
Not heavy, slow and drrty in the same way as the others but still some of the most phenomenal heavy drone-rock you'll ever hear.

Also this is some seriously cathartic heavyosity, especially "I Saw It! That Which Before I Could Only Sense.":

Big up to Godflesh and co.
One of the most underated bands ever, and now better than ever (IM0) as JESU.

Also the new OM album is exquisite, minimal and ultra heavy.
