Fl Automation Help
Hey guys,
This is probably a really obvious question, so hopefully you can put me out of my misery fairly quickly...
Basically, I'm trying to automate low/high frequencies on my kicks using the parametric EQ in FL studio, which I've done. Basically, I'm just cutting the lower frequencies and then bringing them back in. Simple.
However, instead of running the automation clips the whole way through the song, i just wanted to copy them as they are, and put them somewhere else in the song, and then change them as i like. The problem is, when i try and change anything in the new, copied clip it changes the original automation clip, so that they are exactly the same. Is there a way of stopping this from happening, so that they are completely independent of each other, without creating a new automation?
Thanks in advance...

Re: Fl Automation Help
Well if you copy, it's always going to edit it. The trick is to not copy and create automation control points at the point where you left off. So say you had your original automation how you wanted it, scale the end of it to where you have no automation points and then slice and move that piece. You can then add all the new automation points you want. You just have to make sure your end/start point is the same as the end point of the automation control points before it.
Aside from that, which is really using the same automation clip throughout, you can try the copy and paste method. After you copy/paste, make the pasted automation clip unique. Then goto link to controller and link it back to the same parameter you want automated but don't remove conflicts so the original and copied automation will both automate the same parameter. I'm not sure how well that will work or if it will work at all though. Speaking strictly from memory. I always use the same automation clip and just make slices from the point where I left off to draw new automation. If you want to copy automation and apply it to another parameter entirely, then the unique/link to controller method works.

Re: Fl Automation Help
yes, this, but i think you then have to link it back to the right parameter after making unique. just goto the dropdown for the automation clip again and select link to controller and link it to the right parameter and don't remove conflicts. not really sure if it's necessary or if it will still be linked to the same parameter after you make it unique.toni wrote:Drop down box on the automation clip...make unique or something similar maybe?
Re: Fl Automation Help
just tried it out and not sure if something changed in 9 or if it's just the way it always was, but you can't make a copy of an automation clip unique. you'd have to use the same automation clip like i suggested, or you can just right click on whatever parameter you're automating and create another automation clip, which would then be independent from the other one. just don't overlap them.

Re: Fl Automation Help
actually i was entirely wrong. you can make automation clips unique like i thought. i was trying it in the demo of 9, which apparently only the demo doesn't let you do it. let me do it fine in the full version. thought i was going crazy...
Re: Fl Automation Help
Thought they were going to change this in 9 so you could make unique and remain linked (AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN) this has been a nagging little problem with automation clips. Haven't even tried it out cause I'm turning into an ableton fannyboy.
Re: Fl Automation Help
That's exactly how it works now. If you make the automation clip unique in 9 it preserves the link to the controls. My misinformation (edited it) was due to the fact that I was looking at the demo at work and making them unique was completely disabled. I tried it last night and when you make unique it's the same thing as just making a new automation clip for the same parameter/control, except you CAN copy existing automation if you want to.nowaysj wrote:Thought they were going to change this in 9 so you could make unique and remain linked (AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN) this has been a nagging little problem with automation clips. Prior to 9 you did have to relink to the control you wanted automated if you made an automation clip unique.
Re: Fl Automation Help
Awesome. They followed through with a feature! Do you know if you can drag and drop fx across the mixer. They said they were going to do this, but I can't seem to do this?

Re: Fl Automation Help
You can also just create a second automation clip for something you already have automated. Just name them so you can keep track, simple.
On the subject of automation, is it possible to automate the volume of a whole pattern that has instruments running to multiple mixing channels?

Re: Fl Automation Help
You can drag and drop fx presets across the mixer and you can drag and drop fx from the plugins database across the mixer. Wish you could drag and drop the order of plugins in chain, but you still have to use the move up/move down.nowaysj wrote:Awesome. They followed through with a feature! Re: Fl Automation Help
I haven't been able to do that re the dragging? Will look into this.
Re the moving up and down, it got worse! U used to be able to use the scroll wheel to move the plugin order, rather than using move up or move down from the drop down which was tedious. But now they did something where clicking changes the focus or something, so it interferes with the scroll wheel. SUX.
