I'm not one of these people that considers our English to be better because it's the original (after all, both of our dialects evolved from the same point when those grumpy fuckers got on the Mayflower).... but CHIP implies something far thicker than a crisp, which is, as it's adjectival name suggests - crispy.

We would refer to the above fries as fries generally (thin cut chips or French Fries), "chip" generally refers to a thicker cut chip:

I wouldn't ask for "chips" in McDonalds, I'd ask for fries. But if you ask for fries in a Chippy you're going to get laughed at because they don't sell them.

Pringles cans say potato crisps and it's an american food. Same with other brands I buy, I noticed they either say potato snacks or crisps. I mean it fits, they're crispy and all.. chips sounds like some ground up potatos or something.. like microscopic pieces.

When refering to burger places and stuff I would say fries, can't remember the last time I actually said or even saw "french fry" on a menu to be honest, but I probably just don't notice it.

They were originally known as "Pringle's Newfangled Potato Chips", but other snack manufacturers objected, saying that Pringles failed to meet the definition of a potato "chip". The US Food and Drug Administration weighed in on the matter, and in 1975, they ruled that Pringles could only use the word chip in their product name within the following phrase: "potato chips made from dried potatoes." Faced with such an unpalatable appellation, Pringles eventually opted to rename their product "potato crisps" instead of chips. However, this later led to other issues in the United Kingdom, where the term "potato crisp" refers to the product that Americans call "potato chips"

A Belgian legend claims that the term "French" was introduced when British or American soldiers arrived in Belgium during World War I, and consequently tasted Belgian fries. They supposedly called them "French", as it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time.
