Any Ableton guru's up for helping me out?:)

Post by serox » Thu Sep 24, 2009 12:06 pm

I am trying out Ableton from Cubase/Reason but I am getting stuck every 10 mins and then wasting shitloads of time trying to work out how to do things. Would be handy if I could get someone on MSN who could point me in the right direction.

Last night I spent hours on google/youtube trying to work out how I could assign a VST FX to a single hit on the Impulse machine for example.

I can give you something in return if there is anything I have...
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

there is a way to do this that's outlined in the current computer music ableton special, but its not as straightforward as it would be to do the same thing using the drum rack. the drum rack does offer much more flexibility than the impulse rack for this kind of thing, but personally i do prefer to use the impulse rack.

hopefully this can help you

once you have setup your impulse rack you need to create an audio track for each of impulses outputs. once you've done this, make sure you have the I/O options showing on each track, if you can't see them then click the I/O button on the right hand side of the screen. In the audio tracks where it takes the input from you will need to change to the original impulse track (by default this is usually set to Ext.In) and below where you have set the impulse track you should be able to in the box below select which channel from the impulse track is coming through that channel. now you should be able to add fx to these channels in the normal way. hope that helps.

question:

what is it about impulse that makes you choose it over drum racks. just curious.

well its a bit of a daft reason, but i just found it first and have loads of impulse racks already setup for individual hits. so i have loads of impulse racks of kick, then loads of impulse racks of snares etc... which means i've never had to do the thing above of separating the outputs of impulse to process them in that way.

if i was to use the racks in the normal way and have all the different hits on one rack then i would definitely use the drum rack.

I pretty much dow the same thing with the racks. interesting...

perhaps my method is "wrong"...?

like I load up the template which consists of a snare rack, kick rack, hats rack, percs rack...seems like what you do with impulse.

nothing wrong with what you do. everybody just has their own approach, just pick what works for you.

can I add you two to msn? I am sure you could point me in the right direction when I get stuck lol. I am not a total noob but Ableton is a bit different to Cubase and searching for simple things is ruining my flow big time.

sure...but I only use gmail...does that work with MSN these days lol, I'm clueless. and I dont have internet at home...

you may find that what you do in several steps in cubase, ableton eliminates like 2 or 3 extra steps, so you find it a bit weird.

I have been going thru tutorials but u know sometimes it is easier to just be able to ask a mate a quick question so I can keep moving forward with what I am doing. This works well for me but may appear lazy. I have spent years learning other DAWs the hard way:)

Any reason you are using Impulse instead of a Drum Rack?

This can be done in Drum Racks easily. Just select the sound you want to affect, drag the VST to that sound. Voila. Simple.
