the day i call it funkstep is the day I die, or mutant funk for that matter, dont try it xl8tr, you already coined 1 genre name which was pretty shitty, dont try it.

great article and an interesting read for someone looking into the london scene from outside and not fully understand the constant shifts

really liked this bit
Given all this fragmentation and distancing and differing of opinions, you have to wonder: Is funky already dead? Probably not, although like the name itself, funky’s identity has always teetered on an ambiguous point. Which is kind of perfect, really: funky as an “anti-name,” the kind of thing born out of 20-plus years of genre-waving until everyone just got sick of it. Like, if you had to title every new fashion season something new, and eventually you were just like, “fuck it… let’s just call this season 'clothes.'”
but yeah, funkstep is a pretty fucking awful name.... seems to be the way these days though

Why are people trying to be deep or philosophical about this?!
its called Funky because misinformed Garage/Grime people were blinkered enough to call everything remotley housey 'Funky House'.

He's not talking about how it came to be called funky though, he's talking about why he thinks it's an apt tag.

I could be massively wrong because I'm just going on what's been quoted here, my work computer wont let me on to the site to read the article haha.

the way they talk about genres and scenes and the death of stuff makes me feel strangely anxious, until i remember its all just music. seems a bit of an overly-serious article

Funkstep = SIGH

Londoners going nuts as always.

the whole reason Cooly and Roska are so sick is they crossover seamlessly, without rebranding or hype
