well i've been using reason for about 6 months and i absolutely love it. it's really helped me in my producing. i came from a hardware background mpc, some other samples, drum machines and some fx pedals. i never really cared about compression, limiting, eqing or filtering before. if my drums sounded off i'd just get better samples or layer them with something. it was a simpler time...

reason has been like a playground. i had heard a lot of people describe it as "limiting" but i felt like i had an overwhelming wealth of options. unfortunately now i've gotten greedy.

after reading the "free alternatives to albino and massive" thread somebody mentioned (i think futures_untold) that you wouldn't get a freeware "all in one" solution to compare with albino or massive but you could use multiple free synths.

so for the past couple of days i've been trawling gersic and kvraudio for free fx.

unfortunately my laptop is being fixed at the moment (after i tried to downgrade to xp from vista i ended up breaking everything) so i haven't been able to demo much. i have made a list of freeware fx though based on what seems popular and how they look. i'm kind odd in that i cannot work with something that has a horrible or cheap looking gui.

i also have been searching on forums as well and i came across futures_untold "sell me a compressor" thread. at the end he ended up settling on a product at http://www.jeroenbreebaart.com/

their plugins are really cheap and look nice.

i'm wondering does anybody know of any other cheap fx? i'm interested in delay, reverb, phaser, echo, filter, ring modulator. if not i think i'll just go with the multiple freeware options.

i'm not interested in mixing my tracks to a "professional" level or anything. just get them to a listenable standard for uploading. i'm not used to having to produce things so "clean"...

3rd party Vsts don't work with reason...no?

The best part is that every time they add a new plugin to the bundle, bundle owners get the new plugin for free!

The GUI is resizable (dragging the edge of the window scales it up or down) + you can set the colours of each plugin.

Vojtech (the main prgrammer) seems to actually listen to users feature requests. (Facking important when a plugin is almost perfect but one little ****** bit isn't right!) He added an invert phase feature after I suggested it to him, and several people requested the GUI changes thingy mentioned above.

Did I mention that all the plugins are multiband? (Thusly, no need to frequency split everything in your DAW, just do it in the plugin).

Er, so yeah... Buy the bundle cuz the whole bundle costs less than just one Soundtoys plugin!!!

Nebula is a pretty cool multi fx vst, has exelant quality but hits hard on cpu an you can run in latency problems sometimes. Its working abit like convulsion reverbs, but it can sample setting and emulate them aswell (lets say from a big neve console). Theres a free version too.V.2 cost 20 bugs with 5+ gb content, some free libaries are availible too. it has no delays tho. I use it quite often.

yeah +1 the Kjaerhus free plugs are solid and cover some basics. You can do well with alot of good free vsts, and i mean alot, that are not synthedit or synthmaker based, (i dont say its less quality but the self coded plugs seem to be better out of the bunch). To get the best free plugs you have to follow forums like kvr or so , that takes time. I still recomand nebula cos i think its realy big bang for the bug , its like UAD for the poor So for the OP i would say scan kvr forums and you get what you want , there are alot talendet devs that throw out their stuff for free.

What is nebula ?

A vst fx plugin that uses samples ( impulse responses , iam not sure how i call it in english) from real hardware and it can sample mostly everything : compressors , eqs , reverbs, amps , filters etc + it can emulate the settings. I posted the link above. As i said its very cool but you can expect some bugs and heavy cpu usage.

i like the audio damage stuff, plus they are not really that expensive. i also dig the guis.
