Another Fl Problem (Too Much Bass)

Yes you herd it right, too much bass.
I have FL8 and i'm using NI Massive. I have made a bassy synth in massive. When I add a bass drum kick the kick was too quiet, so i turned up the kick sound and it kind off replaced that half a second of bass line (bass line goes quiet). So I turn the bass line down and its fine but the bass line is too quiet. How can I keep everything loud and bassy without distorting any sounds?
Thanks in advance

Your trying to fit too much into that frequency and running out of headroom. Your best bet to keep both sounds is to use side chain compression, basicly when the kick happens the bass ducks under it by going quieter for a sec. Or simply dont let those sounds play together. Or pan one left, and one right that way they have their own headroom instead of competing for it. Or some careful eq'ing to take out the competing frequencies...There are many solutions to that common problem.

you could split the bass into two channels, one for sub one for the more harmonic part, if the sub part is all sine then leave that alone, and hi pass the other part between 150 hrz and 200 hrz works for me, this will leave some frequency space for the kick to come through the mix, i also find it usefull to set up a buss for the basses so u can adjust the overall level without having to fuck around gettin th bass levels right against each other again,
hope this helps,

You can only have one thing happening at the same time in the same frequency range.
So what you have to do, is either move your kick or your bass in time or in frequency range.
Something you might want to think about is using a higher frequency kick. It might sound weird when you listen to it by itself, but listen to it in the mix. If you've got a subby bass going, the kick will ride right on top of that, and still punch through.
This is what to be listening for when you are picking your sounds for your track. Don't listen for sounds that u like, listen for sounds that you like and will fit into the mix.
This problem is a plague, by the way. I wish we could add about 60 hertz right around 80 hz, everything would fit much better.

It's fairly easy to solve this. Find out on what frequencies your kick is at (somewhere between 80 and 120Hz) and cut those frequencies from the bass. Vice versa for the kick, cutoff the frequencies which are vital for the bass (especially sub). Avoid using sidechaincompression in these situations as it fucks with your dynamics, while you could solve this with proper EQ'ing.

Kind of a noob question, I see people talking about setting up a buss for bass and drums all the time, but haven't been able to find what that means anywhere. Is it different from an insert channel? Anyone mind giving a quick explanation?

a bus channel is a grouping of multiple channels, so for instance if u have a kick channel, snare channel and a hihat channel, you group these into one channel. I'm not a FL user so don't know how to do this.

on fl you just have to create a new send, to do this select the channel you want routing ie kick drum. on an empty channel click the square icon above where it says fx, then cancel the routing for the kick into the master, if u dont do this it will double the output of your kiks, then repeat until everything is done,
hope that makes sense

Ah ok I get it, was able to figure it out by that. Thanks.

Sounds like you've still got the Limiter on the main channel - might wanna turn that off until the end. (It's a matter of opinion, but personally I find it hard as fuck to mix into a limiter like that)
