If theres a song i want thats not released on vinyl......
If theres a song i want thats not released on vinyl and there not going to release it can i buy the track digitally and then send it off to somewhere like dub studio and have it put on a dubplate?
Re: If theres a song i want thats not released on vinyl......
Not legally without permission - but ask the artist I'd be surprised if most would say no - some might even send the wav.

In general, I can't see many artists being pissed off about it as long as you have bought the mp3, as the last poster said it's best to inform the artist though and request the wav as you'll get a much better cut.

What's the difference between cutting a dubplate and burning a cd?

Dubplates, although they do have a limited lifespan, give you the full frequency range and vinyl bass warmth you need.
CDs are cack. the game's called Dubstep, not Tossy-Little-Tesco-Own-Brand-CDR-with-some crapshite-MP3s-that-sound-like-the-final death-fart-of-a-dying-vole-step.

I think he means its just transferring your digital format onto a different medium. Why is it ok to burn a cd and not cut a dubplate without permission?jolly wailer wrote:er.. a turntable won't play cds?

have a look on juno download, more often than not the .wav is there to buy, send it to cutting house, voila.

ah yes that makes more sense when its worded that way...
for one.. I'd say there is a discussion involved.. its pretty easy to get in touch with "most" of the artists in the edm scene, easier still in the dubstep/funky scene - so its not a stretch to say you 'could' ask for permission
for another thing.. a dubplate is a one-off, u could lose the dubplate and you'd only be losing the single dubplate.. cdr/digital in general is always duplicable
would 'some' artists even be against individuals pressing up dubplates of their tunes? ... maybe? but I'd put money that that number of folks is far fewwer than people being cool with their tunes being burnt to cdr

Re: If theres a song i want thats not released on vinyl......
the problem would be that released cd's and MP3's are mastered differently to vinyl. So if u where to get one cut to it would be mastered twice and probably sound pretty brass, I imagine most producers would have a problem with that, same way they would if u were playing a 190 MP3 or summin. (...Plus you would have spent the cash for a poor sounding copy)
If u can get the pre-master off the producer then happy days, otherwise it might be about discogs or ebay...
ps. I've never cut anything just repeating what i think is true, ya get me

would have to agree with this, I mean it is likely that people are going to actually appreciate the fact that you have gone to all the trouble of going cutting house & paying the dough to get it sound correct, rather than putting it on a CD which is rather expendable (i.e. loosing it), when compared with a dub.jolly wailer wrote: would 'some' artists even be against individuals pressing up dubplates of their tunes? ... maybe? but I'd put money that that number of folks is far fewwer than people being cool with their tunes being burnt to cdr

1) Buy WAV
2) Download WAV and keep it stored on PC
3) Order dubplate and send the WAV you downloaded
4) Pay
5) Receive dubplate
6) Play dubplate
And yes, you can put it on a dubplate, what's the point of selling music to DJ's and not letting them put it on a CD or dubplate.
And no you don't need to ask the artist. Except if you ask if you can burn CD's first too

What about free 320s? how would the sound quality be too.
Give me a jungle or garage beat and admit defeat.

Without debating the legality or quality issues of medium...
Don't cut a 320 to Dubplate, get the Flac or Wav file and have it cut. It's not "legal" persay, but this is one of the legal gray areas that I am inclined to be down for. Cutting a dub is easier than ya think.
320 only if there is no chance of you ever getting the wav.

wouldnt sound too great from a 320, try getting a wav.
i would say ask the artist, its just common courtesy

Hey guys cheers for the information this has actually turned into a really cool debate which i'm sure a lot of people haven't really thought about
Re: If theres a song i want thats not released on vinyl......
its a good feelin when someone asks to cut a tune u've made, wavs get sent, would never cut a 320 tho
Re: If theres a song i want thats not released on vinyl......
It's kind debatable if it's legal to cut a tune you've bought to a dubplate.
If it's for your own personal use, i.e you're not selling the dubplate, then I would do it.
Just as you can copy a CD you own to your iPod.
