Recommend me a field recorder

So I'm basically after some sort of digital recordable microphone to sample stuff from nature and my room etc, and I used to use this Zoom-recorder for it when I lived in Denmark last year. I quite liked it, and it's quite affordable, but I'd just like to hear some recommendations by you lot. Do you have any recorders to recommend me, or any recording techniques to get that clear and nice sound? I'm looking at paying maximum around $300 for it.
Any suggestions?

i can recommend the ZOOM H4n.
i got 4 of these guys at work and think they´re a decent option for a good price.

the built-in mics sound okay for simple recordings but i prefer using external condenser-mics.

I concur about the Zoom H4n. I have an original H4 at my work and it's always done the job and it's a reasonable price. Plus you can use it as a soundcard in a pinch.
Edit: If you are looking for recommendations for something other than a Zoom, I've heard good things about the Edirol one but it's like $50 more than the Zoom.
I've used the Zoom for recording conferences, radio drops, live PA's and mixes and field recordings and for the most part it's been cool. Those Tascam one's might be good too, but I can't speak from personal experience for the Edirol's or the Tascam's.

I've been seeing the edirol r09hr for around that price range now. Been using it for a while and it's been solid. easy to get clean recordings with it.

Thanks a lot for your recommendations, lads! I'll hit a music store and try them all out.
