I used to write tunes on a windows laptop until it died, when my work replaced it with a powerbook. Which is sweet, but I wanna write tunes again, and can't get hold of any fuckin software for it; anyone know where I should go?

i ran reason on my powerbook and rewired it through cubase for mastering before i copped logic. you can get pretty decent sound from it, and it is great for just throwing down rough stuff when you have ideas. i scored everything from a mac irc chan, try searching on one of the irc bot search engines. i have never had much success with speed on mac torrents, i don't think the user base is there to make it happen. good luck.

plenty of quality studios using Macs!

Try Audacity for freeness though.

for recording I just found audio hijack pro thanks to the one mr DQ. Used it last night and it worked like a charm. I tried audacity but that shit crashes on my powerbook when I try to record... works on my windows pc and on my freebsd machine though...

Also, you may like to know that if you can get the 3 cd's for reason for windows, all you need is the mac installer which you can find a torrent for pretty easily. Then you just need to burn the other 2 cd's (make sure you label them orkester and... whatever the other cd is supposed to be labelled or your mac will just spit em out). ;)

Of course I would never use stolen software because that is illegal and therefore just wrong. 8)

There's a little secret that Mac don't want anyone to know... but if youre in higher education you get a massive massive discount on Logic and some other things too. I'm a uni student and my copy of 7 pro cost me £300 instead of £700.

You won't find out about it online because they lock you out unless youre on a a computer thats inside a registered University or HE college. But you can ring them and buy from them over the phone.

They will ask for your name and uni but i'm certain they can't check this because the uni can't disclose this info because of various privacy laws.

Alternatively just ask someone who is at uni. Not a solution if youre totally skint (sorry triac) but good to know. Especially if youre a student....

because neither me or the Dubstep forum condone any kind of fraudulent behaviour of course! You ain't seen me... right.

This is the same if you work in Further Education, so i imagine it would apply if you work anywhere in the education sector... but i ain't sure...

This discount applies to hardware and sofware...

Mac users in the uk, i use a place called Jigsaw.. I think, they do the education discount, but don't quote me on that ... if not the Apple store will definatly do it...

Yeah, I think it is. I work in HE and got my powerbook nice n cheap. The only reason I'm not buying Logic with the discount is cos I'm saving for a PC to run my studio from (the powerbook ain't mine see ;-) ). I jus need something to play with til I get the PC (and Cubase!).

Same here mate, but i got an i book, you not considered getting a G5?.. if you hang on a few months and wait for the Intel G5's to come out, i reckon you'll be able to pick the current G5's up at a decent price...

Thats my plan anyway.. my Studio PC's ok, but i just love mac's...

Yeah, I could be tempted, but I reckon I'm gonna try and get as much performance as I can for the money, which means a home build PC. Want to get my own iBook at some point, though, for live sets..... (or that MacBook - looks sweet!)
