'Subtle' kick drums

Zefa mentioned this in the other kick drums thread, but I'd like to see if anyone else has any ideas.

There are certain kicks that are more subtle (but still powerful) than punchy, they feel more like getting hit with a 50-pound pillow instead of a 50-pound sledgehammer.

Anybody who knows what I'm talking about want to give some tips? I've been playing with short (5-10ms) attack times, which is sort of working, but I'm still not quite there...

I think its just alot of compression and maybe BP filtering to make it as subby as possible without fucking up the mix and definitley messing with your attack times would do it aswell i think.

I layer 3 kicks one with a big top end one with a meaty mid and one quite subby.

Then its eq eq eq, maybe stick some low shelving on the sub to get some punch.

Yeah, a soft kick with a bucket load of compression will give it that 'thump'. Not too much compression though, cause I find that tends to take a lot of the bass off.
