i was wondering if u recommend anyway of sorting, labeling, storing, taking care of, anything to do with vinyl besides playing it that i should be aware of/take into practise?

Somebody as protective of their vinyl as me, I'll start the ball rollin'

-Store them vertically, not slanted though that can warp them

-Keep the sleeve opening to the side, if its at the top dust can get in (I keep mine at the top but they are kept inside a case so it isn't so bad)

-Invest in a vinyl brush / vinyl wiper, I've got the brush, cost about 8 quid from juno and is really useful for when you get back from those clubs and they are covered in dust. Just need the cleaning fluid now and Ive got all bases covered.

-Keep your needles up to date, I can't afford new ones and it pains me every time I stick them on a new vinyl

-I keep the vinyls ordered by artist name alphabetically, so much easier to find that way

stop buying it and start collecting mp3s because when the polar ice caps reverse or defreeze in 2012 all you're going to be able to take to your fallout shelter is your HD.

Yeah I don't listen to people who go on about impracticality of vinyl (not aimed at you yellowhighlighter)

I got into dj'ing vinyl because I'm addicted to vinyl, not because I wanted to dj.

Soon I'll go the serato route and then be sorted, or I'll get a cdj, just so I can play my own tracks / play out mp3 only tracks

hey i still buy vinyl and i don't even DJ out. i just think it's a dead format.

I love vinyl. When you get home with some new plates you really feel like you have got something for your money.

Anyway...... Mp3 is for pussies who arent man enough to carry a record bag on their skinny girl like shoulders, man up for fucks sake!. Plus they sound like a midget wanking into a traffic cone.

As for tips on storage etc:

Make sure you dont store them ANYWHERE near a radiator or window as the heat from either will warp them to fuck.

Dont have the tone arm weight puished too far along the tone arm or the needle will gouge the grooves to pieces. (NB: unless you intend to do some scratching....)

Ordinary lighter fluid works as a vinyl cleaner substitute if you are stuck.

concerning vinyl. i collect since years early jamaican originals, sometimes rarities playing VG, so i gotta take care of them.
first thing is, in what sleeve you could put them in. I put my 45s into polylined inner sleeves. i think that's the best cause they are also antistatic. and thats probably one of the most important point, try to store your records ''antistaticly''.
i actually don't know if my suggestions ''fit'' into the collecting of new, mint records, mine are over 40 years old. so quite a difference.

keep away from any heat source. a friend of mine stored a pile of records next to his radiator. bad idea. they had heat warps.

actually you don't have to look at so many things, especially concerning mind records.

- just keep away from dust (Antistaticc storing)
- keep away from humidity
- keep away from heat
- keep away from your girlfriend

if you have acetates records clean them carefully with eather destillated water or go to the next optician. they have proper liquids. always clean/rub in direction of the groove, and dont rub to much... won't clean it, it will just push the dirt deeper into the grooves.

have fun taking care to your records, it's like a baby. it grows, it's expensive, it takes a lot of time and sometimes it pisses you off when it skips (skipping would be puberty )

bit off topic but how frequently are you 'meant' to change styli? Like how long before they will start to cause damage to your records? Assuming you played for about 2hrs a day on average.

just playing don't worry
if you're spinning with weight on the arm is another story
general advice is to change soon as you start to lose freq content

I have a pinched nerve in my back and massive neck/shoulder issues and can't carry record bags around all the time anymore.

I still buy the occasional vinyl, but I'll be damned if I am gonna break my back carrying it anymore.

And for the record, I am a woman, who does NOT have skinny girl-like shoulders (big neck/shoulders from carrying vinyl, LOL), do not plan on "manning up", and don't think hurting myself in order to prove something is smart or useful.

some kid on a lofi hop hop style says once he samples the shit out of a record he just backs it up as flac on his computer and takes it to good will

good plan of action....i can't imagine moving when you are borderline hoarder with 50 smelly crates of records from 1968

cant say much about vinyl for listening, i only have a few classics for that

Jesus...... You make it sound like you carry the damn bag for 12 hours a day or something Lighten up ffs. Use whatever you want to play out, but the fact is Mp3's sound like shit. Case closed. I dont use vinyl to "prove something" as you put it, I use it because it is the best sounding and, as ninjadog said, the easiest to manipulate.

And for the record I have carried MORE than 50lbs in a record bag for the last 15 years and have no problems at all.... In fact I am often complemented on my lovely "V" shaped back. Photos are available if anyone is interested

I've carried two full bags of records over 5 miles to get home after a gig.

If you've got a car and the majority of your bookings are on the same continent as you, then go all the way and use vinyl. Its not as if you have to carry your tunes back from the venue like I've done in the past...

moaning about how heavy your tunes are is like moaning about how big your dick is, surely?
