Serato stuff

Post by rbnc » Thu Oct 22, 2009 11:57 pm

With these digital vinyl systems, how do people set up a workflow whereby they can play actual vinyl as well as the timecode vinyls?

The way I imagine it works is you plug your decks into the Serato or Traktor soundcard and then the soundcard into your laptop, but then when you want to play an actual vinyl does that have to go through your laptop and then out of the output into your mixer?

I'm sure that isn't how it works, I'm just curious as to what the solution really is...

the phono signal gets routed away from the laptop. to play mp3s you use the line, and to play vinyl you switch to phono. so each turntable takes both line and phono from each channel.

SL1 its a pass through, so if its vinyl you go thru phono, serato you go through line.
SL3 I think its clicking a button on the laptop? Unsure as its not passthrough? Haven't had a chance to mess with the SL3 much

^ this, but only if you've plugged the hardware through AC rather than USB - otherwise you can't run thru.

actually you CAN run thru just plugged into USB, you just can't unplug the laptop or the signal gets lost. AC just lets you unplug the laptop without interrupting the signal.

Note the RANE(TM) mixer... absolutely required. Best mixers on the market. Especially with the non contact lifetime faders!

@set records you dont need the rane mixer

you just switch the line/phono switches to use vinyl or serato mp3s. simples.

You can use Serato with any mixer. The through connections are ON the Serato scratch amp.

Once again, you can play regular records with Serato. And Traktor Scratch, and TORQ. All of them.

as others have said all you have to do is switch from LINE to PHONO on your mixer to run normal vinyl.. i use traktor scratch and it works like a charm :)

On a related note to this discussion, does anybody know a needle that works best spinning on both vinyl and time code?
