Right i was just wondering the opinion of others on this, if you buy a vinyl and have no way of getting on to the computer is it ok to download it illegally. Considering vinyl is quite alot more expensive than CD or digital download. Surely its the same as ripping a CD?

personally, i think thats fine. You've paid for the media once and, as yopu mentioned, you could just rip the MP3 yourself.
I dont know what the law would say though.
Its like the ROM's you can download. They are illegal to download and play UNLESS you own the original game in the original form it came in.

I think it's probably illegal, but if you really CBA to create an MP3 yourself then I guess it's not really immoral.

It may be illegal, but I don't see a moral issue with it.

There is no such thing as illegal downloading. Only illegal uploading. Illegal downloading is what corporations want you to believe exists.

Neither do I, it's only the same as you recording it into mp3 format from your purchased vinyl and banging it onto your mp3 player. It being up there for all to take is a different story but frankly I think once a physical record has sold out completely and is not going to get a repress then it's not going to harm to artist financially for it to be floating around on the net. I hope music does loose all financial value then only the artists who love making music even if it means not making a mass profit will continue to do it and the ones making wank just to try and make a profit and 'get paper' will fuck off and do something else.

That's not true. Explain to me, how downloading copyrighted material without consent or license to do so is legal.

Explain to me, how uploading copyrighted material without consent or license to do so is legal? I just clicked a link, didn't know it'd lead to an mp3 file. This works in court. That's why.

I've never bought a CD and not instantly ripped it to my computer... so doing the same with Vinyl seems perfectly reasonable and since I don't have a little usb deckomabob handy it's the only way for me.

He is right, in a way. Downloading may or may not be legal depending on the laws of your country, but the recording industry, to my knowledge, has only ever slapped ridiculous fines on people who share files.

Nothing wrong with it at all.
When I started using MP3 I downloaded as many of my old jungle, house and techno tunes as I could find. I'd paid for them all in one format or other so I didn't see any problem with it. I've also downloaded tracks that have been deleted or aren't going to be re-pressed.
People who download all their music for free because they don't want to pay for it are proper arseholes though.

True story, I'm such a poor man I rely on free mixes and youtube to satisfy my cravings, at least until I can get a new job and then go crazy haha

the private copy is still legal most places as far as i know, so it's ok from all angles i guess
i'd even give you a bonus mp3 for each vinyl bought from my labels if it was possible

yah its not actually legal, even if you own a physical copy, because you are getting it the illegal way. when you buy copyrighted work you are allowed fair use (or user rights) of your product, that is copying for your own personal use. however, sharing that copied product with others is not part of your user rights. but i know there is some caselaw in norway (or some other nordic country) where you could get done for uploading but not for downloading. because you 'supposedly' don't know what you're downloading, so you can deny trying to obtain copyrighted material for free, but when you upload, you know what it is you are sharing.
anyway, i personally dl stuff without paying for it, mostly to check it out. if i like an album or track, i'll get it on itunes. if i like a film or tv show, i'll go out and get the box set. for films, i usually get like the nice dvd version with the fancy cover or what. i think i'm actually buying more stuff than i would've otherwise since i discover more things this way...
