lol it broke? damn.

Iomega is what I use. pretty good. but that was my first and I've had no issues except for on the weekend when I passed out watching a movie and woke up to find it had turned itself off.

How the fuck did it break? How do you know? If its new then it should have a guarantee. Usually 5 years.

Nout wrong with western digital, not the best but they have served me well in the past.

Sounds like a fluke, if it's less than a year I think they replace it.

yea i need one as well as i think my issue with comp may be i need a fresh xp install or 7 haven't decided yet, but too much to backup as i didn't partition it orig last time like i should have and so much audio shit could be lost if i don't back it up
any reliable cheap brand for like a 500gb or tb? normally i'd go western digital or seagate, but dunno with externals

Yeah these two are solid companies, but also take into consideration of Maxtor, lacie and iomega.

yea maxtor is my main drive i got for cheap and runs like a tank. just didn't know if some companies were more solid with externals vs their internals.

Yeah, also Seagate owns Maxtor now so probably the exact same drives, it's just a name now.
I would suggest getting one that's big enough, not too big. Something about those 2TB drives make me nervous, I don't think I can trust all that data to a hdd. If anything I would get 2 1TB drives and mirror them...

The My Books are pretty nice for what they are, but not as portable as some. I have a 500gb that's been great for a year+ with everyday usage to back up projects and some movies too. Got about 90GB left.

I got a Lacie 500 gb a while back. Nothing flashy, just a black box. Wouldn't have it any other way. TBH if I had it to do over I probably wouldn't buy an external. Set up a network for your house and load a desktop up with large internals. The externals never seem to last very long. Especially if it gets dropped or something. You can't drop an internal and they seem to last forever, I have never had one go on me *knock on wood* The first HD I ever had a gave away, all the others are still in use. If anything I would get one of the small ones that powers off of USB.

Seagates have always done me proud. (internal and external)

I have had a few bad experiences with Lacie's

I am trying out a Samsung Spinpoint internal drive but the jury is out on
long term reliability.

Always keep a back up with HDD's it a matter of when, not if.
They are 100pct guaranteed to break.

cheers

can't believe it only lasted a day! :o
Western Digital aren't a shabby make...
WD/Maxtor/Seagate <--- I'd go for any of those three, they seem to be the most respected. only hard drive I've ever had fuck up on me was a 40GB Maxtor, and it was like 15 years old anyway...

I've got a 1TB Lacie for almost year now, never had problems with it.
