SUB ASSISTANCE!!

Hello DSF

I have been producing for over a year and feel my knowledge of EQ, Compression is ok but I'm still struggling to create a refined amazing heavy sub sound.

I am using Reason 4 and my usual process is to use the Malstrom. Initialize that play a sine, lower the octave, compress a bit, then EQ.

If anyone can help i would be gratefull!

This is the latest track i have made i have pushed the sub as far as it will go before it destroys the other sounds but i still want more from it!

Sub has a nice feel actually. It's kind of strange and unique. It's definitely not thunder sub, but it does have a push. Really though, it just is a bit odd, which is nice.

I was never able to mix in reason. Maybe u want to export your stems and mix them in another daw. Use proper eq's, compressors, and meters?

Just an idea.

Can't Say I've Used Reason In A While But I Would Recommend Subtractor For Subs I Always Found It Gives A Cleaner Output On Ultra Low Frequencies Without The Muddyness. A Patch I Always Used Was A Sine , Layered With a Triangle 1 Oct above, filtered to taste . On The ADSR try a little dip on the S it gives the sub a little 'punch' on its volume envelope......obviously this wont be appropriate on all your tunes but hope it helps.

@nowaysj I also quite like the sub feel i have made however i am looking to achieve the "Thunder Sub" as you call it! I have been thinking of buying Pro Tools to rewire reason to it and mix from there.

@drpressure I am not sure why but i never use the subtractor i am going to give that a go, it seems inevitable as its in thee name SUBtractor shame on me for not checking it out!

Thanks

Also i enjoyed the resampling thread thanks for the link, not sure it will help with my sub issue though?

Combinator: RV7000 (Room verb very low + compression), 6:2 mixer, malstrom both sine's activated (not always necessary), EQ, Scream distortion set on tape + additional effects.

i use reason and i use thor for sub, with scream 4 distortion unit set to tape distortion. then EQ out all freqs over about 350hz and put through a maximiser with full input gain and lowered output gain, then compress with a lowish threshold and highish ratio. i aint no expert though.
i do like the sound of your sub
mine sounds like this

about 30 seconds in

is it a good idea to put reverb on a sub? i have heard that you shouldnt put reverb on subs but i havent tried it... i guess it would help to emulate a bass guitar sound.
also if you have 2 sine waves on top of each other won't they do a good old fashioned bit of phasing?

I hadn't used the scream distortion on the sub

Using the tape with the distort knob down and the mid and high faders cut beef it up quite well.

@ s i c k b o y I also heard reverb should not be used on the sub but I'm really not sure now?

Ok i have spent a bit of time with the subtractor, it is a lot less muggy than the Malstrom so thanks for that. I've found that EQing multiple times helps.

I'm using reason 4 so anyone who would like a copy of this patch feel free to DL!

Anymore info would be appreciated

the deal w/ subbass:

KISS

( ie Keep it Simple, Stupid)

you basically just want a smooth, even frequency response across the low end. sine waves can do that... or they can get wonky sometimes.

quite often a low-passed square wave or a sine that's been distorted/bitcrushed and lowpassed will give you a sub with more girth.

no compression, no eq beyond lowpassing, just get to rockin.

Q re compression of sub and that el b video that has spawned so many questions - what the heck is he talking about compress your sub so your woofer's don't move so much?

What the heck is that about?

Primarily room verb or small space gives the sub more character in small quantities, also cutting frequencies w the verb eq. Additional sines cause minor phasing but I've found that only occures when you alter cents similar when making a reese.

it sounded fine to me, it needed to serve as a mid and low bass so i didnt just make it super subby
