1) White noise @ 968hz
2) Lfo on the cutoff at 1/8 rate
3) render->save
4)import into sampler
5)lfo on the pitch at 1/6 rate
6)tremolo gate at 1/4 rate
7)bitcrush down to 9bit
8)distort
9)reverb with high pass around 700
10) compress to taste

or just sample the begining of a record..... :6:

This..

It really shouldn't be a "secret weapon" site but barely anybody knows about it...

Its where I get all my odd samples, random bits of synthesis, natural organic ambience(anything from random street chatter to people on the train or even rainforest sounds and thunderstorms) , etc etc etc...

You can even find real instrumentalists on there who do multi sample packs and if you ask nicely, they will even make a sample specially for you - ive asked a few people on there if they could record me something and they was more then happy too..

a bit offtopic sorry but had to be said.

There's a sample pack I put on Freesound, includes some pretty lush vinyl crackle + hum.

http://www.freesound.org/packsViewSingle.php?id=2308

Hope it's some use!!!

Cubase 5 has a nifty little tool. Grungelizer.

Produces vinyl crackle dependant on the timeline (1900-present) to make it more grainy or clearer and hum if you want and has some other cool features. I just bounce down a few seconds of that sometimes adding a bitcrusher and i'm good to go. For anyone who hasn't got that though freesounds is a brilliant site, i'm suprised more people don't know about it.
