>RUSKO

With a forthcoming album of Diplo's Mad Decent imprint, RUSKO is set to become dubstep's first cross-over star. Christopher Mercer, aka Rusko was born in Leeds in 1985 to a musical family. From day one Rusko was surrounded by music whether it be his families piano’s, guitars, banjo’s and saxophones…or in his later years the heavy reggae and dub sound systems of Leeds, music has always been an integral part of Rusko’s life.

After graduating from Leeds university with a degree in musical performance, Rusko discovered the world of dubstep through SUB DUB and a debut appearance from the “Digital Mystikz”, having spent the past 10 years making future dub alongside Leeds very own Iration Steppas, Rusko connected with the sound and moved down to London to further advance his musical opportunities with Sub Soldiers label mate Caspa.

Veering away from the dark, serious side of the sound Rusko brought a highly energy and fun approach to the dubstep massive and quickly coined his own take on the genre, turning the scene upside down. With a sound that appealed to many people outside of the dubstep world, his productions became more adventurous in formula, sound and energy. His huge hit “Cockney Thug” has been played by everyone from Pete Tong, Switch, Diplo and Santogold. And has been remixed by Buraka Som sistema, Diplo, Drop the Lime and the Scratch Perverts.

His sound continues to develop with different BPM’s that lean to jungle, house, hip hop or electro, either way, whatever BPM or tempo…you can immediately tell a Rusko track.

At 23 Rusko is only in 1st gear, with collaborations on the table with the likes of Switch, Diplo , Yo Majesty and Wiley the future sure is looking bright. Already setting the radio airwaves alight with his own productions and remixes of artists such as Adele, A-Trak featuring Kid Sister, Leon Jean-Marie, Rusko is only going in one direction: onwards, upwards and far beyond. Rusko is like Dr Dre, Timbaland and Switch all rolled into one with a serious overdose of bass.

>PHADED
Blazing the U.S. Dubstep scene constantly for the last several years, “Chicago Dubslinger” is a name that Phaded solely secures. El Phado is one of the pioneer DJ’s on the premier online Dubstep radio station, Dubstep.fm, with a loyal following for his Sunday broadcast- The Dented Sessions Live From Chicago. He’s also the founder of the Dubfix franchise, which is responsible for bringing some of the biggest names in the Dubstep scene to the midwest. Phaded has played along side the likes of Caspa, Rusko, Benga, Mary Anne Hobbs, Hatcha, Distance, Reso, Kode 9, The Glitch Mob, Ana Sia, Dj Ott, Bass Science, Shpongle and VibeSquaD just to name a few. You can always prepare for the heavyweight bass with Phaded in the mix.

Phaded has a busy schedule ahead throughout the U.S. He recently rocked Mad Classy in Austin, TX., and has upcoming performances with The Glitch Mob in St. Louis and Rusko in Chicago.

>QUADRATIC
quadratic crafts dance floor oddities that skirt the boundaries of detroit electro, techno and dubstep. since their first ep release in 2008, the long-simmering collaboration of chris widman and colin harris of abstract science has impressed chicago crowds with dynamic live performances opening for kode9 at sonotheque, dj distance at smartbar and daedelus at the empty bottle.

chris widman is best known as a dj and long-time host of the chicago radio program abstract science on wluw 88.7fm. over the years, he has shared the bill with a diverse cast underground luminaries—amon tobin, cinematic orchestra, jaga jazzist, m83, meat beat manifesto, monolake, plaid, the orb, unkle and ulrich schnauss, to name a few—and has dj’d every type of event imaginable, from raves to operas. colin harris is an agile developer who spent many hours of his youth tweaking lines of code, playing with music trackers (and guitars), and pumping hours of bass-drive out of his computer subwoofer. graduating from a casio sk5 to fruity loops to ableton live, harris has transformed his programming skills to adapt custom devices for live performance.

the duo first met in 1998 at widman’s club residency in columbia, missouri, where he first encouraged, and eventually, invaded harris’ music projects: widman’s experience as a dj and drummer complementing harris’s sense of melody and technical dexterity. the result is quadratic.

this transplant from austin has been a fixture in the texas electronic music scene since he started djing in 1994. most notably, his work as a dj and promoter at numerous club nights and his labels tektite and chalant. since moving to chicago, he has quickly proved his chops with a variety of sounds from dubstep to house and techno, as a resident at lava lounge for the monthly variant night and a regular guest at bass goes boom.

With a retarded description, who's this clown Miles Raymer?

Too dark & weird for mainstream yet it's begging for a britney vocal?

?

I don't think that write up is that far off the mark. I wasn't familiar with Rusko's style, but after last night, I think Raymer's description was pretty apt. Heads always complain that reviewers like him don't know shit, but he covers alot of different genres and doesn't miss too often on the rare electronic music writeups that make it to the Reader.
He does a decent job of making events sound interesting to an audience that doesn't know anything about the artist.

Now, what the heck was up with the crowd last night? I've only made it to a few d&b and dubstep shows at Smartbar recently, but that was the most packed event that I've seen there in a very long time - for any genre. I cannot remember the last time I had to stand in line to get in. Lots of aggro to, every one seemed very pushy and on edge. Is the crowd size and attitude typical for those shows these days?

Anyway, I'm certainly not going to complain about dubstep@SB on a weekend. Keep 'em coming!
