myspace strategies

for some reason or the other my old account got deleted perhaps 3 weeks ago. perhaps in a drunken rage I clicked cancel account...not sure at all.
in any case I set it up again. but now I'm realizing how terrible I am at that sort of online networking thing. is it really significant? by default I'm forced to spend a lot of time in front of computers...but does that mean I go and read those online "How to effectively use myspace" sites where they get all tactical? people rarely listen to other people's music on there anymore. it's a promo gladiator ring...who can spam the most. I was on 50 cent page and other big name artists to see what their comments were like. there are about 100 "do you like how I look in my profile???" spam messages in their comments. it's nonsense. then you get kids like 'yo Fiddy mah n!gga wuz rilly rilly hoodcheck mah new shit caled We Tote Techs Off Safety'
ranting. but basically my new game is to see how far I can go by NOT spamming and adding people

lemme see how far that goes.
the approach now is blogs and DJs. college radio Djs...whoever. and they don't gotta be pitchfork level blogs either. just blogs. many of them have a larger following than you'd think.
basically...checking out university/college radio shows and seeing who plays what and contacting them accordingly.
the internet is a fucked up 'place'.
fess up, how many of you send spam messages? don't be embarrased...ya gotta do what ya gotta do to bring some sort of attention to yourself.

yeah i reckon myspace is 90% over in terms of getting attention for yourself. you should still have a myspace page, but just as a resource - i.e. if people want to hear some of your tunes, find a press photo or see your discography, they can get it off your myspace page, but apart from that, forget it. as far as i can see everyone just has their friend requests set to 'auto accept' and stuff these days.
instead, yeah, hit up the blogs. even some of the smaller ones are getting 3000 - 5000 hits a week so it's all good exposure. this is what i would do - spend a day going round all the interesting looking blogs (find at least 50, preferably 100), get contact email addresses, then find 2 or 3 tunes you want to give away. oh, and do a DJ mix.
email all the blogs with the first tune (plus a little bio, photo, anything else), ask them if they want to give it away, offer them the chance to have it exclusive for a few days etc etc. most probably won't reply because they get loads of these emails every day. but some (the smaller ones, probably) will go for it. then 2 or 3 weeks later email them all again, saying "here's my new DJ mix - i just gave away a tune recently and it got featured on 10 blogs including blog X, blog Y and blog Z!" and see if anyone runs with it. then go back to step one. don't forget to keep hitting up labels in all this - but really what would be good would be to find a blog that really likes your stuff, who have put up a couple of your tunes and a DJ mix. then hit them up and ask if you can work together - you like their blog, they like your tunes, maybe you can do an exclusive DJ mix for them? write a track exclusively for them, and in return they spam it out to all their contacts, because that's good exposure for both them and you? something like that - just try and think of something interesting that would benefit both of you

great advice! i've been reading more blogs and realizing the exclusive mix thing myself. sonic router, hush house, chrome kids, etc. and realizing how good that must be.
I've been in contact with a couple of blogs so far....don't know whether they feel it or not but it is what it is.
blogging is awesome. it was interesting. I left north america from early 2005 tolater 2006. before I left I never heard of the word 'blog' when I got back Houston was the first place I visited and it was all over the place

gettng CNN coverage and shit.
but some of my favourite music has been found via blogs

Myspace is still useful for connecting with labels, producers, djs etc, there are no "fans" on there anymore tho. Everyone kinda ruined it with all the spam bots and what not. Why wants to be subjected to that? Anyway you still have to have it because when people search for you via google or whatever thats the first thing that is going to come up and people are going to be familiar with myspace to click on it over other links.
I have a feeling google wave is going to play a part in the next chapter of internetting. Get to know asap. For right now message boards, blogs, youtube, soundcloud, twitter and facebook is the standard.
BTW I must be missing something because I have had a blog for a while and I never get any hits. I have throw the links around and shit no one is really biting, any suggestions you could throw me I would be greatfull.

Spam Myspace
Na seriously, I haven't done any Myspace promo for well over a year, and I still get between 10 & 15 new friend requests each week. The majority of them come from DSF where people have clicked on my sig link.
As mentioned above, Myspace is the place to go when searching for new artists. Click on your fav artists friends links and you'll have plenty to check out.
I'm saving up one humungous spam attack for when my shit is ready
U dun no

If it's traffic you want then add tags to your posts like 'Naked pictures or sex tape of X Celeb of the hour' or 'New Facebook Privacy Hack' and watch as your stats soar.

What's wrong with that?
I don't actively promote myself, nor have I updated my profile with any new content in months. I'm not even really trying with the whole thing, it just runs by itself.
As mentioned, once things have advanced to where I want them, I'm gunna do an epic spam sesh again. It isn't as easy as it was when I used to use bots, but I've done enough spaming to know that Myspace is still a useful platform for promotion when one needs it.
Anyway, it depends what you're trying to achieve (if anything). Right now, I'm not arsed whether I get Myspace hits or not. When I want traffic, I'll pay for advertising on the relevant sites and direct people straight to my .coms, complete with online stores and all.

no no nothings wrong that's what I'm saying. if we conservative and say 10 a week you get 40 requests a month, or at least around there. good shit.
lol you used to use bots? can the bots at least be semi-personal in some aspect? or it's uniform messages across the board?

They varied.
The better ones would put the persons myspace name into the message where ever one left a [name] tag.
But at the same time, using bots isn't about being personal is it? I used to promote a myspace profile called Manchestergrime with amusing graphics. The graphics functioned to draw people in through humour and it worked.
I never used to drop shit like 'yo, new tracks in player check 'em out' because people would just block me straight away if I did.
Myspace comments are the best target as others can read them. The next best is sending a message with a friend request.
My profile was blocked once after I sent several thousand messages within a few hours

I simply emailed Mysace about it and they unblocked me
Cheeky fucking spammers!

A friend of mine uses spam bots to promote his band, but TBH I think is a crappy technique really. For instance, I never ever pay attention to spam. Mabe I have once or twice in like 5 years or so.
The personal networking thing i think works much better, but I still find it tricky. The internet is a strange place to make 'friends', although I have made a couple.
I hadn't thought of the dj mix thing - but now that I think about it, it is obviously very useful to have a dj mix. Great idea!

Well this is it really, I generally still check the blogs of the people in my Myspace activity stream.
As you've pointed out, bots aren't great (nor am I sure if they even work on Myspace anymore). But at the same time, Myspace certainly ain't dead!
Just talk to people on forums and email people whose music you like. They'll promote it for you if your music is worth listening to.

On the bots - I don't really like it either, not the way to make friends but it is true what they say no publicity is bad publicity. When people are shopping for tunes they forget that you spammed the shit out of them and only see something that is familiar to them.
I also get a lot of adds on myspace I probably get 5 new ones every time I log on which isn't everyday anymore. The thing is I have had my profile since they started the music profiles and now they have that thing that tells you you have x amount of people that are mutual friends with this person and a lot of people just start clicking on those to get their friend count up. I doubt any of them even look at their profile.
I will tell you though when I was applying for distro and subsequently beatport it came in handy because they actually go to your mypace and look to see how many friends you have and if you are promoting your stuff properly. It can be tough if you are applying and have to start an account fresh.
BTW I gotta couple google wave invites if you want one.

just went to myspace to see what it's like these days...
and it's still a spam filled wasteland
but i get that there would still be producers and labels and such on there
the blogs and djs approach seems much more likely to reach fans who are choosing to listen

my favourite blogs -
www.blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com
http://generationbass.com/
http://chromekids.blogspot.com/
http://sonicrouter.blogspot.com/
http://hush-house.blogspot.com/
http://dot-alt.blogspot.com/
http://www.theheatwave.co.uk/blog/
http://electriczoo.blogspot.com/
...and of course my own,
www.bassmusicblog.com
that's just a few, there are bloody millions out there! I'd say have a look on the blogroll or links page of any of those and you'll see loads more.
and to the dude who was asking about how to get more hits to your blog, it seems to me there are various stages -
firstly, post every day. it's a ballache but it's the only way you'll get people checking back regularly. but also it's kind of handy because it forces you to stay up to date with new and cool music!
once you're posting every day, get twittering and facebooking and myspace statusing and all the rest of it - low level spamming, basically! my blog gets about 15% of its hits from twitter and facebook links
then the next level is to start generating exclusive content - interviews, getting people to do exclusive mixes and what have you. this is a lot harder though and takes up a lot of your time...

s'all about soundcloud now, better quality streaming etc. I tend not to use myspazz much but do use it as an extra resource. Get the occasional add every now and then
