does anyone know of a technique to get that sort of allmost underwater sounds with drums as used in songs like pet monster shotglass by flying lotus, some of buirals tunes and shake off the ghosts by young lovers
I need to get that sort of sound for this hip hop/grime/whatever beat that i'm making

any help would be appriciated

I have just listened to shotglass by flying lotus / shake off the ghosts by young lovers. The only kick I can hear (on my laptop speakers) sounds like a standard 909 kick drum. Both of those artists have the bd loose with little quantization, just like Burial. I think the groove it creates is what you are calling "spligy" (?) or sounding underwater.

If you are making hip hop you will want the 808 bd!

i've been messing around with unquantinised beats quite a lot recently but i guess i may have a try messing around with a 303
it might work if i just get single hand claps and stuff like that and highpass them in the background

i wish i could just go into burials studio and see how he makes his stuff

a 303? think you mean, 808/909?

Anyway, you can download the drum samples all over the internet using google.

You will want the first drum hit of the bar quantized of course but the others after that first hit should be free I think.

Yeh play with HP filters and BP filters on the atmos/drums with quite a bit of reverb but not the same reverb on everything.

Here you go, I think this is the sound you are after...Squeltchy Noise just chop out the individual sounds or loop it up and add reverb to wet it even more.

Took 2 mins to make...Heres how you do it (well how I did anyway)

Take some really bad crackle, add a filter to it (usually a bp or notch filter) turn the res up, with an lfo (probably sine shaped) assigned to it, play with the lfo rate (leave the lfo on free not synced) until you get that squeltchy sound, then resample the results.

you couldm sample the hits you like from those tunes?

i get my splig from samples of water dripping into a bowl theres some on freesound. Also eggs cracking, i dunno a pancake slapping against something, anything that you can think of in real life that makes that kind of noise search for it on freesound, then layer it with a snare or a kick or whatever standard instrument you want. Use effects to make it sound the way you want and there you go a nice organic splig
