i've been crediting pedro almodovar's involvement with devil's backbone to be the reason its so good. it has a perceptible touch of sensuality that del toro's solo film's sorely lack.
if pan's labrynth is good it will be in a completely different way than devil's backbone as he finds his own voice rather than that of a far superior director's or some studio committee's

fuck, just finished watchin this badboy. thought it was pretty accomplished but i'm not feelin exactly uplifted right now. its fair grim - i'm not sure which was more disturbing of the narratives though, guess it depends if you're more affected by the idea of something unknown, or if you fear the inherent evils of human nature.
at least it got me thinkin..
definately easier to take seriously than hellboy though, which - lets face it - is about a big red guy with a coupla burgers stuck to his head.
