Premier London club Fabric are to release a compilation dealing with "140bpm (or thereabouts) bass music" early next year.
If that description seems vague, that's because it is: post-dubstep dance music is in a serious state of flux; a cocktail of grime, garage, dubstep, house, techno and more where many of the world's most interesting current dance producers (Untold, Starkey, above, Martyn) lie.
Fabric's Elevator Music Vol.1 marks a first release for many fine tracks to emerge from this scene - none of these were previously available, apart from on DJ dubplates - and as well as the three previously mentioned artists, features new material from Hot City, Brackles and Shortstuff, Caspa and Rusko, Mosca, Octa Push and more. It will be released on January 18, 2010.For the full tracklist, hit up page three of this article. For more information, hit up page two - FACT talked to Fabric's Graham Best earlier today about the specifics of Elevator Music Vol.1, potential vinyl releases, and whether the club had similar compilations planned for the future.
Hey Fabric. What made you guys decide to do this comp now?
"The idea of doing a comp of new/up and coming producers had been in the back of my head since our label first started looking at releasing stuff outside of the mix series, it just took a while to get things in place internally and with the potential artists."Towards the end of summer things reached a bit of a tipping point with the amount of unreleased material and new producers we were all digging up. It can sound like clichéd bollocks but there's a ton of people here who are passionate about finding and supporting new artists, and the last year has been a stupidly good one for underground dance music."
How did you pick the artists involved?
"One of the original inspirations for the comp came from making up publishing samplers of artists we'd signed. We've worked with people like Martyn, Caspa, Starkey and Vista for a few years now and some of the little CD-Rs I'd made up of their unreleased material worked great as stand alone comps. "At the same time there was a bunch of new artists we'd heard and were really keen to work with, but most'd only had a couple of low key releases, or never put anything out. Elevator Music seemed like a great way to show off some of the artists we've enjoyed working with and also give a platform to the current wave coming through.
"There's probably a million and one half arsed theory's about increased access to a wider variety of music, means of producing etc. but for whatever reason I think the last twelve months has seen things go nuts in terms of ideas being exchanged, sounds developing and amazing tracks coming out every other week. It's a really exciting time and as a relatively well known name in dance circles it made sense for Fabric to try and document it."
