Moving / Relocating to the USA - East Coast
I'm considering a move to the East coast of USA - from my current home in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I think initially it could be a month or two to scope it out - then possibly longer after that.
Was keen to see if anybody had any information on moving, or if there was a good site that covered most things.
I initially felt NY was a good shout, but have been told Philly has cheaper rent - and it's not too far from New York for visits.
Ideally wherever I stay would be a good base for seeing most of the east coast over a few weeks.
Any information would be much appreciated.

I've contemplated this a lot as well, though to the West Coast rather than the East.
Visas are the hardest thing... if you're going to need to find work you're going to need a bit more than a tourist visa (and proper work visas are done through a lottery system).. but if you went out for an extended 'holiday' you could see if a company would sponsor your visa request, I guess?

Yeah, seems to be the case.magma wrote:I've contemplated this a lot as well, though to the West Coast rather than the East.

To those who asked - it's not for the music.
I've got to the age of 26, and realised I've never seen the world. Not nearly enough of it.
The states seemed like a good place to start, and I've met a girl from over that way (Philly) which gives me a good reason to try it this year.
Seems that the best thing to do is get a tourist visa for the 90 days, then try and work something out when I get over. Approach companies etc - I'd likely look for a job in design or music - since design is where my qualifications lie.
Any further thoughts?

Good move & i hope it works out with the lady....
but Philadelphia wouldn't be my choice altho it might suit a Scot.
I'd avoid being entrapped by the attractions of NY but travel down the the East Coast....Charleston & Miami,
look west to Chicago and down the rivers to the Gulf and across to the old Spanish states etc. etc.
The States imo are more diverse culturally and scenically than Europe but the people can be very parochial.
Once you leave the nest, don't settle too quickly. Find a place you really love....Idaho, Oregon...

Yeah - not making any hasty changes music, wise. On The Edge (the label my album is on) is distributed by Z-Audio, and when Echodub do vinyl next year, I think we'll be with Z-audio too.Pistonsbeneath wrote:best of luck to you mate

The good thing about the music, is it's not particularly location specific at the moment.
very good, very good, haha!magma wrote:BINGOI've met a girl from over that way (Philly) which gives me a good reason to try it this year.

In my very biased opinion: move to Maryland! The rent is cheap depending on which county you're living in, you've got both Baltimore and DC less than an hour away, Philly in less than 2, NY in less than 5, and the entire dirty south below you to visit.

network as much as you can before you get out there..
In NYC they have 'apartment brokers' which is an absolute racket, but avoidable.
brokered apartments. you find the listing, which includes the address, rent and apartment description.. you then call a number, probably a broker who will charge you 10-12% of a years rent for essentially only meeting you there with a key to let you in. when i was in Brooklyn it was $1400 for a single in Ft.Green/Bed Stuy. so.. $1.4k x 12 = $16,800 and at least 10% of that, $1680. then on top of broker's fee, most places want you to put down, first month, last month and deposit.
Welcome to Brooklyn, that will be $6600 please.
if you have to do this, research your broker, a lot of them want to deny you your deposit for bullshit reasons, but i found places w/o brokers so its possible.
other than that, love NY.
cant speak for philly, but if you have any connections that you can put faith in, exhaust those for a place to live.
