Hey, so I've been woprking in FL, I like it okay, but I was curious about getting another DAW, just got my paycheck!!! ^^
So, I was looking at Adobe Audition, Acid Pro, and Ableton (I know this one is actually quite popular)
I'm running a windows based system.
If you have any other suggestions and why, let me know. I was kinda considering cubase or pro tools also but don't want a dongle or be locked into digidesign BS.

changing DAW will not make you producing better tunes, you can do big things with just any daw. You could invest in some plugs

I have several plugs, still learning to use them, I just don't enjoy the way FL is set up, I was just curious as to whether there are any advantages of any of these DAWs over the other or any glaring cons.

Tbh, it's all about experimenting and finding which one's workflow suits you best - get some trial versions and see what "clicks".

They are different worlds man, be prepared to relearn everything.

I personally really like propellerheads sofware, Reasons very intuitive in simulating actual racks, and you just dont get much more precise or technically accurate then Renoise...

I like the suggestion of getting some plug-ins, do you have some name brand synths yet? Rob Papen (sp?) has some great software, and you definately might want to look into Massive, FM8, and Albino if you are producing dub, top nothc synths there... If effects do float your financial boat a bit more then a new DAW, upgrade from the traditional FL effects... Better modulation and delay made a big difference in my sound....


Definately get demos before you decide on anything...

And dont rush into something half cocked.

Right now I have alchemy, Massive, and Itchy's free VST's, just to give them a whirl. Demoing Ableton, gonna see how it goes ;]
However, Albino and FM8 have been on my list to get. Both look/sound like spectacular VST's. On the subject though, I'm not a fan of Reason due to the lack of VST support
and now they're charging 300 and it can't even utilize VST or any other plugin? Seems outrageous...

out of all the DAW's mentioned above I'd reccomend Ableton Live

Sony Acid and Adobe Audition are ok, but you'll find more users on the Live platform

If cash is an issue Energy XT's only 50 euro. Still, you'll find a lot of people around here swear by Ableton. I certainly do.

Whats the problem with having a dongle? Its no trouble, it just sits there and is all dongley.

ACID is quality...used that for quite awhile before switching to Ableton. Was on Logic before that.

It's very loop-based....and I'd say you have less control over your tune as opposed Ableton.

But yeah try demos before you even think of shelling out your hard earned cash. Certain DAWS have certain advantages over each other, but if you know what you're doing you can produce professionally on anything. Find out what works for you, I'd heartily recommend Cubase seeing as you're on windows (otherwise I'd be pimping logic) it's a good compromise between Pro Tools (for audio manipulation) and Logic (for sequencing madness) and it supports VSTs which will always give it the edge over Reason (despite my nostalgia for the program).

Steinberg invented the VST platform

it's the leader, not a program you choose because you can't run Logic

I have used Logic, Protools (HD) and I find Cubase wins in terms of workflow and stability

Reaper blows Acid out of the water. And costs less to boot. Can't believe nobody's mentioned it yet.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I do use Reaper on a frequent basis when I need a portable DAW.

Took the plunge, ended up loving Cubase 5 and just bought it. Setting it up right now. Longest install of my lifetime

Actually Ableton is for peole that like pussy.

I would be jumping on the Reaper wagon if I wasnt addicted to getting some fwiw

really how many functions do you need when you're just making beats? cubase would be great for tracking, but it seems like too much for just making electronic music. i think ableton has much better workflow. what can cubase do that ableton cant, in practicality.

I was lazy before I ever touched a DAW lol. That is kind of a dumb statement imo, making shit easier, better workflow etc is a good thing!

I'd have to say right now Cubase is a godsend imho. And I do do more than just electronic music, so it's right up my alley. The sound editing tools are awesome and just about everything I've so far learned/used in it has put a smile on my face. I'm happy, please don't have a DAW war, I was merely asking for suggestions, not attacks at certains DAWs. I've tried the Live demo and while it was good in it's own right, I enjoyed my friend's copy of Cubase a whole lot more.
