Help a naive punk make a very important musical purchase

Post by WatchYourStep » Thu Dec 10, 2009 4:34 pm

Here's what you need to know about me:

- Want to make my own dub, dnb, breaks and electro
- Have recent macbook pro, ableton live 7 lite, edirol audio interface, m-audio monitors and grado reference heaphones

Two producer friends whose opinions I trust (but I want more information) have told me that NI Komplete will allow me to make any sounds and synths I can conceive, any drum sounds I can possibly imagine, etc, basically my one stop shop for making the kind of music I want to.

Please give me either the green light or the red light, so to speak.

You can hapily use ableton if you get enough plugins and samples. There is no 1stop shop for everything! Get to know your software and learn more about proccessing and effects it will all gel someday

Yep!

Get to know Ableton. If you like it - get the full version rather than NI Komplete.

You'll end up spending more money in the next year or so anyway - get yourself an idea of what you want to do before laying out loads of cash.

Am I hearing a resounding YES??

Keep in mind you'll take all the blame if it's the wrong decision.

fuck all that noise...

ableton + reaktor + max4l = win

no reason to even touch ni komplete (reaktor is the only worthy one in there anyways), if you need synths, tons of free ones that do just as good of a job. Learn the basics before you waste money on that ish, seriously.

Personally, as a couple of others have mentioned, I would upgrade your Ableton Live to the full version from the lite version. Perhaps think about getting the suite with all of the instruments. There are plenty of free vst synths out there too. I think you would get more out of Ableton if you don't have any synth programming experience. Think about getting the NI Komplete later after you have played around with some synths and a DAW for awhile.

a decent sample pack is useful if u just wanna make dubstep in your bedroom etc but it'll only go so far!

they're a good basis for constructing drum kits and you'll have effects/wooshes/hits, but as for the 'wobble' you really need to make your own signature sound.

Good luck with it all tho
